Due to the recent imposition of U.S. tariffs, American consumers are left with limited laptop options in the market, as Framework has temporarily halted the sale of its basic models for the Framework Laptop 13.
In the U.S., the sale of certain Framework Laptop models has been temporarily halted, but all versions of this laptop are still accessible for purchase in other parts of the world.
Framework announced the news on X:
Starting April 5th, some US sales of Framework Laptop 13 systems (Ultra 5 125H and Ryzen 5 7640U) are temporarily on hold due to the recent tariffs. At present, these specific models have been taken off our US site. We will keep you informed as we receive updates.
When asked for clarification, Framework stated:
We set our laptop prices based on the fact that there were no import tariffs from Taiwan initially. However, if tariffs rose to 10%, we’d need to sell our low-end models at a price lower than their production cost. Similar calculations and actions have been taken by other consumer goods manufacturers, although many have chosen not to disclose this information publicly.
The Framework Laptop 13 is constructed with simplicity in mind for repair and enhancement, offering flexibility. Furthermore, this laptop allows for personalization, enabling you to adjust features like the port setup according to your needs.
In another scenario, the framework might have decided to raise prices instead of halting sales, but it seems they found such a decision impractical or unfeasible. Increasing the price by 10% for a laptop is quite a significant hike.
An increase in price might negatively affect Framework’s reputation among the public, given their repeated emphasis on consumers on their website. It seems unlikely that pricing the basic laptop model beyond a reasonable affordability level would be consistent with the company’s objectives.

As an analyst, I’ve noticed a recent announcement from Acer about a 10% price hike on their laptop models. Looking ahead, it seems that laptop prices, along with other electronic devices, are projected to rise over the course of the next year, according to the one-year forecast by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA).
I noticed a prediction stating that there’s a possibility of laptop prices increasing by 46%. This percentage might vary based on the tariffs that continue to apply or if new ones get implemented.
As a tech-savvy individual, I find myself pondering about the conundrum businesses like Framework are facing: either hike up their prices or temporarily halt sales on selected products. It’s an intricate dance they must perform to maintain balance in these challenging times.
