As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I, Frank Grillo, can’t help but express my fondness for the unique journey I’ve embarked on within the world of superhero franchises. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been a staple since 2008, it’s the fresh start offered by James Gunn’s new DC Universe that truly excites me.

You see, even though I had a blast playing Brock Rumlow, aka Crossbones, in the MCU, there’s something special about stepping into the shoes of Rick Flag Sr. in this new DCU timeline. It all started with my animated debut as Rick Flag Sr. in the Creature Commandos TV show, and now I’m eager to explore more of this universe’s rich tapestry.

At FAN EXPO Dallas, during the Tulsa King panel led by Joe Deckelmeier from ScreenRant, Grillo reminisced about his Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) days and highlighted the enjoyment he’s experiencing in the DC Universe (DCU) franchise. After reflecting on Crossbones from the MCU, Grillo elaborated on the benefits of portraying Flag Sr. within the DCU alongside James Gunn.

As a movie enthusiast, I found it disappointing when Frank Grillo’s character, Rick Flag Sr (Crossbones), didn’t have much screen time in his earlier appearances, considering how popular he is among fans. It seems Marvel has reincarnated almost every other character, leaving Crossbones on the sidelines. However, I was optimistic about seeing him in action again, given his villainous prowess, as he’s been appearing in Spider-Man and Daredevil comics lately.

Unfortunately, my hopes were cut short as his character didn’t last long in the storyline. Nevertheless, working with James Gunn has always been a pleasure. I provided the voice for Creature Commandos, and now I’m set to appear in Peacemaker, premiering in August. Before that, you can catch me in Superman alongside Rick Flag. It’s a different kind of role compared to my Marvel escapades, offering more of an adventure-filled experience.

What Frank Grillo’s Comments Mean For The DC Universe

It’s no surprise that Grillo’s enthusiasm for the DC Universe is heightened, given how abruptly Crossbones’ MCU journey ended. With DC Studios making extensive use of Flag Sr., he is quickly becoming a key figure who ties together multiple storylines across the franchise, thanks to the interconnected nature of their live-action and animated projects. As Flag Sr.’s live-action debut in Superman is set for July 2023, followed by a return in Peacemaker season 2 in 2025, it seems that 2025 will be a much more active year for the character compared to Crossbones.

In contrast to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) not fully utilizing Crossbones, the super-villain was eliminated in his second film, “Captain America: Civil War.” On the other hand, Flag Sr., though less known, is being actively incorporated into the DC Universe (DCU), playing a significant role in the franchise. This is why Joaquín Grillo’s casting for the DCU timeline in “Creature Commandos” season 1 is particularly thrilling, as it presents an opportunity for a skilled actor to rejoin the comic book genre once more.
