One of the most well-known action stars known for delivering violence to audiences seeking entertainment on free streaming platforms has found a new creative home with James Gunn’s DC Universe. He lends his voice as Rick Flagg Sr in “Creature Commandos” and portrays the character both in live-action for “Peacemaker” Season 2 and next month’s “Superman”. In a recent interview, the actor expressed that he is enjoying his work with James Gunn significantly more than his time spent in the MCU.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Grillo initially played Crossbones in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” later appearing sporadically in “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Captain America: Civil War,” and an alternate version of his character in “Avengers: Endgame.” However, despite these appearances, Grillo felt that the value of his character was underutilized. Recently, at FAN EXPO Dallas (as reported by ScreenRant), while promoting the upcoming third season of “Tulsa King,” Grillo expressed this sentiment.
It’s disappointing that Crossbones didn’t appear often on screen back then, as fans adore this character. Marvel seems to have utilized most other characters but him. I anticipated enjoying a larger role for him in Spider-Man and Daredevil comics given his status as an excellent villain. However, it turned out that he was disposed of rather swiftly. Nevertheless, I enjoy collaborating with James Gunn; I provided the voice for Creature Commandos, and you’ll see me in Peacemaker, which premieres in August. Before that, there’s Superman featuring Rick Flag. Essentially, it’s a new experience compared to my Marvel projects.
It was sad that Crossbones didn’t have more screen time because fans like him a lot. I expected to explore more of his villainous role in Spider-Man and Daredevil comics. Unfortunately, he died too soon. But I always have a great time working with James Gunn; I worked on Creature Commandos and Peacemaker (August release), and there’s also Superman with Rick Flag before that. This role is different from my Marvel projects, more of an adventure instead.
Frank Grillo Returns to the DCU in ‘Superman’
According to Grillo’s statement, he will first appear as Rick Flagg Sr. in the live-action DC Universe version of “Superman.” His character has been hinted at in various trailer snippets for the film. Lately, the actor has spoken about the movie and David Corenswet’s interpretation of the main superhero.
David has an aura reminiscent of Christopher Reeve, as if he embodies the essence of Superman. There’s just something about him… It’s hard to put into words, but when I saw him, I had that feeling – ‘Ah, this man is like Superman.’
Many fans are eagerly awaiting this news – excluding those who favor Henry Cavill’s portrayal of the Man of Steel, of course. With Superman poised to potentially surpass not just DC records but also Warner Bros. Pictures’ opening weekend record, it appears that there will be a large number of people flocking to cinemas to catch Superman on July 11.
In the eagerly awaited second season of Peacemaker, Grillo is set to reprise his role as Flagg Sr. However, the future trajectory of his character within the DC Universe remains unclear at this point. Yet, based on his remarks, it’s apparent that he may have a more permanent role in the DCU compared to what he had in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
