The answer to this fan theory is yes—but also no.
Frankie Muniz, the actor known for his role as Malcolm in the Middle, has revealed the last name of the family in the popular TV series.
In an exclusive conversation with Will Marfuggi from TopMob News, Frankie shared his thoughts on a theory that’s been circulating among fans for quite some time. During the early filming in 1999 and subsequent press junket, it appears Malcolm Wilkerson was introduced, as suggested by Frankie. There was also an episode where either Hal or Francis wore a name tag bearing the surname Wilkerson. (Don’t forget to catch more from Frankie on TopMob News tonight at 11 p.m.)
Despite Frankie’s confirmation that some parts of the theory were accurate, it was determined that the family would go by a surname-less identity.
In my role as a lifestyle expert, I’ll put it this way: “We chose to maintain our privacy by not revealing our last names or our exact location. This way, our experiences could be relatable to anyone – your family, your neighbors, or even strangers. We wanted the focus to be on our journey rather than any geographical limitations.
25 years since the debut of the Fox series, with news that the star of Agent Cody Banks, Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek, are teaming up again for a revival, Frankie has gained new insights after watching the entire show for the first time alongside his wife Paige Price.
He shared that he binge-watched the entire 151-episode series in 2017, as he hadn’t had a chance to watch it when it initially aired, and his wife was unfamiliar with the show. “We decided to sit down and go through it all together,” he explained. “It was quite fascinating because there were so many episodes filmed and so much happened that I found myself saying, ‘Wow, we made that? That’s amazing!’
He added, “However, my view of the series transformed significantly once I saw it. Unlike the series I believed we were producing, the humor I assumed it contained was actually different – but in a good and intriguing manner.
Another thing that shifted in watching it as an adult? Frankie’s opinion of his own character.
Reflecting on the series after watching every episode, he acknowledged that Malcolm was the least favorable character. He also shared his thoughts about Justin Berfield’s character, Reese, saying, “Initially, while filming, I didn’t particularly enjoy Reese. However, upon rewatching it from a distance, my feelings have changed – I found myself appreciating Reese more.
Fans can expect a fresh, new take on the show when its reboot eventually airs.
Frankie, whose movie “Renner” hits theaters on February 7th, couldn’t contain his excitement over the spinoff series. “Brian and I began discussing this at a dinner back in 2015,” he shared. “Now, ten years later, twenty-five years since the show debuted, it’s finally happening! I can hardly wait for people to see everyone and the fresh ideas they’ve cooked up.
As a lifestyle expert, I can’t help but share my enthusiasm about the upcoming adventures of Malcolm and his family. With each new script I read, I’m captivated by the endless possibilities that lie ahead. I have no doubt that viewers will be equally thrilled and eager to see what unfolds!
