Freddie Flintoff candidly discusses the intense anxiety he experienced prior to resuming cricket after a distressing incident that occurred while filming for Top Gear left him injured.
This weekend, the retired cricketer will appear on the Jonathan Ross show. There, they’ll talk about the consequences he faced following his grave injuries, keeping him indoors for multiple months, save for necessary medical visits and operations.
Eventually, going back to the sport that earned him nationwide recognition brought renewal to his spirit following those difficult times. However, embarking on the first step towards coaching for the England Lions was truly terrifying.
He confided in Ross, saying, “I faced severe anxiety that left me nearly immobilized. It took me multiple attempts to muster the courage to exit the room. I even had to talk myself up in the mirror. I believe this was due to the extended period of inactivity.
“I’d not shown myself without a face mask to anyone. It was like starting again.”
Established in 1982, the England Lions serve as the nation’s second-tier cricket team, primarily consisting of budding young talents with the potential to eventually progress to the senior national team.
Speaking about his comeback to cricket, Flintoff expressed that the cricket world is where he feels the most at ease.
He shared that the TV was enjoyable, but it felt as if he had returned home, immersed in cricket once more. At a time when he seemed to require it the most, cricket welcomed him back with open arms.
After some time away, I’ve returned to the world of television work and occasional jobs due to financial obligations. However, my true passion lies in cricket once more as I’ve resumed coaching – a role that brings me immense joy, and it seems to be where my future lies.

As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but share my excitement about a remarkable story that will be gracing our screens on Disney Plus this upcoming Friday, the 25th of April. It’s none other than the gripping tale of Flintoff’s resilient journey post his near-fatal injury, a journey meticulously documented in a compelling new feature-length documentary. This riveting film offers a poignant reflection on his illustrious career and the personal trials he has faced recently.
“I really get into the cricket segments when I watch documentaries; I only wish they made up a larger portion. It’s tough to listen to others discussing me, especially since I retired such a long time ago – it feels like another lifetime entirely, as if I’m just an outside observer.
On the upcoming episode of The Jonathan Ross Show, Flintoff will be joined by actors such as Rebel Wilson from “Juliet & Romeo”, Jason Isaacs known for “The White Lotus”, David Oyelowo from “Government Cheese”, and Sophie Willan who stars in “Alma’s Not Normal”.
