Freddie Prinze Jr. Reveals His I Know What You Did Last Summer Involvement (And Fans Will Be Divided)

Fans anticipating a major role for Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Ray Bronson (Freddie Prinze Jr.) in the revival of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” might want to reconsider their expectations, as Freddie Prinze Jr. has disclosed that the upcoming sequel will mainly feature new characters. Despite both actors returning to their classic roles after 27 years, they seem to have more supportive roles in the July 18th release, rather than taking the center stage. Instead of revisiting the story of the original survivors, the new movie appears ready to introduce a new set of characters into the franchise, with the original stars acting as mentors, passing the torch to the next generation.

Just had an engaging chat on the Scale Talk Podcast with David Miniatures, where I elucidated my and Hewitt’s roles in the upcoming July 18th release. It was a fascinating discussion about our parts in this exciting project!

The actor shared that director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson meticulously developed the characters of Julie James (portrayed by Love) and Ray Bronson (my character), even though they’re not the primary figures in the film.

As a dedicated cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve confirmed my comeback as Julie James, a role I last played in 1998’s “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.” Interestingly enough, the cameras are rolling once again on this project, and it’s been 27 years since I’ve stepped into this world. Alongside Prinze Jr., we’re set to make a splash in the franchise, reviving characters that have captivated audiences for decades!

Rather than focusing solely on the original characters who survived, Prinze Jr. commended Robinson’s method of blending the established characters with the newer generation.

[Kaytin Robinson] propelled the other cast members incredibly, as Prinze Jr. expressed. It’s not a case of, ‘Here’s the Ray and Julie movie we’ve been waiting for.’ That doesn’t make sense given the circumstances. The character is deceased, so it must be a new take. And the way she seamlessly integrates us with the new generation is beautifully executed. The script is exceptionally well-written.

The updated lineup features Billy Campbell, Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Haur-King, Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nichols, and Gabbriette. However, Sarah Michelle Gellar will not be reprising her role as Helen Shivers due to her character’s demise in the first film.

Brandy, the singer known for her role as Karla Wilson in the first sequel, has shown eagerness to reprise her character. She told The Hollywood Reporter, “Just give me a call because I made it through that movie! I was battered but alive at the end, eager to continue. I didn’t meet my demise in that film… Jennifer, Freddie, if you’re listening, reach out to me.

In this fresh edition, you’ll find both familiar faces and newcomers, similar to how modern horror series are being revived. Successful franchises like Scream exemplify this strategy, handing over leadership to the next generation while still paying tribute to the original cast.

Originally released in 1997, “I Know What You Did Last Summer” was both directed and co-written (alongside the “Scream” script) by Jim Gillespie, inspired by Lois Duncan’s novel. This movie played a significant role in shaping the teen slasher genre resurgence of the late ’90s, alongside series like “Final Destination”.
