2023 saw Microsoft integrating a Virtual Private Network (VPN) function into their Microsoft Defender app. This feature was made available free of charge for all users subscribed to Microsoft 365 Personal and Family packages, thereby empowering numerous individuals to utilize this complimentary VPN service as part of their subscription plan. Microsoft labeled it as a security enhancement aimed at allowing users to browse sensitive internet data through a secure VPN tunnel, promoting privacy protection.
Although not as feature-rich as other VPN services, the inclusion in Microsoft 365 was a fantastic bonus, one I frequently utilized when browsing the internet on public networks. Regrettably, Microsoft has recently announced that they will be discontinuing this feature towards the end of this month, barely two years after its initial launch.
The document from Microsoft’s support team explains their objective is to keep you and your family secure while browsing online. Regularly, they assess the usage and efficiency of their features. As a result, they have decided to discontinue the privacy protection feature. Instead, they will channel their resources into new aspects that will be more aligned with customer requirements.
In an unfortunate turn of events, this announcement arrives hot on the heels of Microsoft raising their subscription fees, effective immediately. This increase affects both Personal and Family plans, with each costing three dollars more per month than before. Microsoft explains that this is the first price adjustment for Microsoft 365 in over a decade.
The new pricing plan encompasses Microsoft 365 Copilot, an addition that infuses AI capabilities into Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and other applications. Nevertheless, this upgrade also means the elimination of the free VPN in Microsoft Defender, a feature I’ve found particularly useful up until now.
