The game that comes free with a PS5 has been downloaded over four million times on the PlayStation Store, as per a recent announcement from its publisher. Last year, PS5 owners enjoyed games like Astro Bot, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade, Silent Hill 2, Black Myth: Wukong, and Rise of Ronin. These games were either exclusive to the console or only available on PS5 and PC. It’s worth noting that this isn’t a complete list, it just highlights some of the offerings. However, while you need to buy most of these games, there was also a free exclusive PS5 game released last year that people often forget about.
Prior to the launch of Silent Hill 2 in October the preceding year, Konami had already released Silent Hill: The Short Message in January of that same year. While Silent Hill 2 garnered critical praise, Silent Hill: The Short Message did not. Interestingly enough, while Silent Hill 2 retails for $70 on the PlayStation Store, Silent Hill: The Short Message is available for free. Moreover, a recent post on social media from the official Silent Hill account reveals that this free PS5 game has surpassed four million downloads on the PS Store.
A free PS5 game on the PlayStation Store achieving four million downloads might not set a new record, but it’s significantly larger than the player base that most PS5 games will ever attract. Given its smaller, experimental nature, this number isn’t too shabby. The post implies that Konami is quite content with this figure, as they wouldn’t typically publicize something they were ashamed of on social media. In fact, it boasts more players than have experienced the previously mentioned Silent Hill 2.
The game offers decent value given its controversial nature. On the PlayStation Store, it boasts an impressive 4 out of 5 stars based on over 38,000 user reviews, but on Metacritic, it’s currently rated 53, with several critical assessments.
According to messages from her friend Maya, Anita arrives at a notorious apartment building with a history of suicide rumors, as described in the official synopsis of the free PS5 game available on the PlayStation Store. Inside, she discovers her perception of reality shifting dramatically upon encountering strange, otherworldly environments haunted by a grotesque creature. Maya’s message was cryptic — ‘you can’t leave until you find it.’ But what exactly is it that Anita is searching for?
If you’re intrigued about experiencing Silent Hill: The Short Message on your PS5, here’s a heads-up: The game duration falls between two to three hours, with limited replay value. However, since it’s absolutely free to download, the length and replayability might not be significant factors for you.
