Friday the 13th Prequel ‘Crystal Lake’ Teases Return to Horror Fame

After a considerable wait, enthusiasts of the chilling horror genre have something exciting to look forward to – the official comeback of the cherished series Friday the 13th. Instead of a movie revival, this timeless slasher universe, primarily revolving around the enigmatic figure Jason Vorhees wearing a mask, is set to resurface in an innovative format. A TV prequel titled Crystal Lake, produced by A24 and airing on Peacock, is now being worked on by showrunner Brad Caleb Kane (who has previously contributed to the It prequel, Welcome to Derry). This creative individual has recently shared a new set photo, sparking anticipation among fans.

The popular “Friday the 13th” series will make a comeback on television screens. To clarify, there was indeed a “Friday the 13th” TV show in the late ’80s, but it didn’t include Jason or any characters from the movies. The upcoming series, titled “Crystal Lake,” will explore events that transpired before the 1980s “Friday the 13th” movie. In the original film, Pamela Voorhees took revenge on the campers due to their negligence, which led to her son Jason’s drowning years earlier. At this point, a release date for “Crystal Lake” has not been announced as it is currently in the early stages of pre-production. However, Brad Caleb Kane has shared an exciting update on Instagram that fans can check out below.

The Friday the 13th series is renowned as one of the most influential horror franchises in film history. In 1980, screenwriter Victor Miller and director Sean S. Cunningham collaborated to create the movie that played a significant role in establishing the slasher genre, particularly during the 1980s when many horror films followed the “teens in peril” formula. Over time, Friday the 13th transformed into an unstoppable series of movies. However, around the mid-2010s, as discussions about a new sequel were taking place, the rights to the Friday the 13th franchise became embroiled in a prolonged legal dispute.

Rising From Development Hell: How ‘Crystal Lake’ Will Give New Life to the Iconic Slasher Franchise

The picture under examination doesn’t provide many details; it simply shows an empty construction site where workers are working. Yet, Kane has pointed out something in the upper portion of the image. There appears to be a wooden panel with writing on it. It reads “PAM LIVING RM.” Could this possibly mean “Pamela Vorhees’ Living Room”? This interpretation aligns well since Linda Cardellini is the only confirmed cast member, and she will portray Pamela Vorhees, who was originally played by Betsy Palmer in the original film.

Even though the prospect of witnessing Jason Vorhees once more seems intriguing, it’s premature to speculate whether he will actually appear in the series. Remember, the legal complications were resolved only when Miller and Cunningham gained separate rights to Friday the 13th. As executive producer of the show, Miller now has access to elements from his initial script. However, it’s important to note that the Jason we knew from the 1980 movie, the one with the hockey mask and wielding a machete, didn’t debut until later. In that film, Jason was portrayed as a ghostly boy who had drowned, appearing in the final dream sequence, which is iconic for its jump scare factor.

Contrary to popular belief, Cunningham does hold the rights to the iconic character Jason Vorhees wearing the hockey mask. However, it’s yet to be confirmed if he will be part of the series. Rumors suggest that the upcoming prequel titled “Crystal Lake” will be based on Miller’s work, implying that the series might not include the masked killer. The intriguing question now is: Can A24 and Kane create an engaging “Friday the 13th” series without Jason?
