In a fresh twist for fans of the “Friday the 13th” series, the iconic slasher character gets a facelift as they prepare for their television debut. A24 and Peacock have been working diligently on “Crystal Lake”, a prequel TV show based on “Friday the 13th”, for several years now. After Bryan Fuller’s departure, the show has switched its showrunner for the second time, but a recent casting announcement seems to be putting things back on track.
On Monday, it was announced that Linda Cardellini has been cast as Mrs. Pamela Vorhees (Jason’s mother) in the upcoming film ‘Crystal Lake’. Many fans recognize Cardellini from her roles in the live-action ‘Scooby-Doo’ films and television series, as well as her Emmy-nominated performances in ‘Dead to Me’ and ‘Mad Men’.
The narrative will revolve around Crystal Lake and its central figure, Mrs. Vorhees, who became notorious for her role as the killer in the 1980’s “Friday the 13th” movie. In that film, Betsy Miller portrayed this character, delivering a performance that is often praised as one of the finest supporting roles in the annals of slasher films.
The storyline of the upcoming movie, Crystal Lake, remains largely unknown, except for the fact that it will delve into events that transpired prior to the original Friday the 13th. The ongoing legal disputes surrounding the films and the character of Jason Vorhees have prevented a reboot of the slasher series, as well as the release of the Friday the 13th video game. Interestingly, Crystal Lake seems to be navigating these legal issues by avoiding the iconic hockey-masked killer that has terrorized moviegoers for decades.
Bryan Fuller initially had involvement with “Crystal Lake,” but he departed the project due to creative disagreements with A24. Subsequently, Brad Caleb Kane, currently working on the “IT” prequel “Welcome to Derry,” took over from Fuller as the creator and showrunner for the series.
Ever since I saw Jason Voorhees pop out a guy’s eyeball in 3D at age 8, I’ve felt my creative journey would intersect with ‘The Man Behind The Mask.’ My childhood was shaped by the era of slasher movies, and none have had as big an impact on that genre as ‘Friday The 13th.’ I’m thrilled about joining this legendary series, especially with bold collaborators like Peacock and A24.
