Frieren Studio Madhouse Unveils New Anime Project’s First Look Coming in 2026

The animation studio known for popular series such as “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End,” “Hunter x Hunter,” “Monster,” and numerous others is set to return with another visually stunning series titled “Awajima Hyakkei.” This new project from Madhouse will premiere in 2026. The first teaser, along with two posters, has recently been released, and the main staff behind the show have also been announced.

Instead of Madhouse’s animation being as breathtaking as many anticipated, the latest teaser for Awajima Hyakkei veers towards a more artistic, film festival-worthy style. The enchanting watercolor trailer and posters hint at a vivid, visually captivating, and emotionally resonant tale that delves into the lives of four teenage companions.

Awajima Hyakkei‘s First Teaser Is Stunning

The initial sneak peek for “Awajima Hyakkei” doesn’t delve deep into its storyline or characters. Instead, it presents a variety of stunning watercolor images, among which there’s one depicting four high school girls. Even though the full anime might not be in watercolor style (although that would be splendid), this teaser offers a glimpse of the atmosphere and ambiance that viewers can anticipate when “Awajima Hyakkei” premieres next year.

Initially, posters for “Awajima Hyakkei” offer fans a more detailed glimpse of the four high school companions as they sprint across a picturesque watercolor backdrop en route to their school. Another poster offers a closer scrutiny of two main characters. The upcoming series will be directed by Morio Asaka, famously known for “Cardcaptor Sakura,” at Madhouse. Kunihiko Hamada, renowned for his work on “Chihayafuru,” is in charge of character design, while Yasuhiro Nakanishi, best known for “Kaguya-sama,” oversees series composition. The music will be produced by Takahiro Obata, who previously worked on “SHOSHIMIN: How to Become Ordinary.” Take a look at the new posters below…

What Is Awajima Hyakkei About?

The manga series by Takako Shimura titled One Hundred Views of Awajima, or Awajima Hyakkei in its original Japanese, centers around the lives of four students attending a school reminiscent of the real-life Takarazuka Musical School. The girls harbor dreams of performing on stage and grapple with the intricate relationships, melodrama, and romantic entanglements that come with being part of an all-female theater group.

Takako Shimura is the creator of the popular manga “Sweet Blue Flowers,” which shares a universe with “Awajima Hyakkei.” In addition to this work, they have also written the “Wandering Son” series. Initially published on the now-defunct web manga platform Poko Poko in 2011, “Awajima Hyakkei” was later moved to Ohta Web Comics in 2016. It remained there until the conclusion of the series in March 2024.

The release of “Awajima Hyakkei” is tentatively set for the year 2026. More specific details, such as the season and exact date, will be shared at a later time this year.
