On August 14th, Gladys passed away at the age of 46. Contrary to some rumors, she was not 42 like Elvis was when he died. Her death was due to a heart attack, and long-term alcohol abuse that led to liver failure was listed as a significant contributing factor.
According to the Associated Press, Elvis knelt by his mother’s bedside and cried. At that time, he was just 23 years old, and he shared with reporters, “It tore my heart apart. She had always been my sweetheart.

And eventually Elvis suggested to her that she come to Vegas less often.
On October 9, 1973, their divorce became official. While Priscilla remembered a couple of challenging court proceedings, they reached an agreement on shared custody for Lisa Marie.
