From Gang Boss to TV Consultant: The Dark Past Fueling ‘Gangs of London’ Authenticity

As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but draw a connection between myself and the captivating character of Finn Wallace, portrayed brilliantly by Colm Meaney, in the gripping series “Gangs of London.” You see, Stephen Gillen, once an East End mob boss, served as the inspiration for this intriguing figure. However, unlike Finn Wallace, my journey has taken a different turn. I’ve left my past behind and now dedicate myself to preventing others from succumbing to the lure of criminal activities.

A Tough Start

I hail from London, born in 1971, but moved to Belfast as an infant during the turbulent times known as The Troubles. At six months old, I was cared for by my aunt who acted as my mother, unfortunately, she passed away from cancer when I was nine years old. From the age of eleven, I was placed in a succession of harsh children’s homes back in London.

I harbored deep resentment within me. Growing up, I was trained for minor criminal activities which eventually led me to participate in major organized crimes such as extortion and armed robberies. I yearned for acceptance.

Behind Bars

At age 14, I found myself at a juvenile detention facility, due to my involvement in gang-related activities and inflicting serious physical harm. In 1991, I was given a 17-year prison sentence, spending 12 years behind bars in different prisons, including five years in solitary confinement. During this time, I shared quarters with Charles Bronson and Francesco Di Carlo, who were known associates of the Sicilian Mafia.

Institutionalised

2003 found me stepping out from the confines of prison, embarking on a long, arduous journey to rejoin society. In those early years, I offered my time and energy to aid the homeless and engaged in physical labor. My thirst for knowledge led me to enroll at the London School of Business and Finance where I graduated with honors. With this newfound skillset, I ventured into entrepreneurship, but soon recognized that my personal story held immense value. And so, I began public speaking, sharing my experiences from the shadows. Adhering to the rules and leaving the darkness behind, I’ve found a new path forward.

Life Experience

I provide expert advice on TV shows like Gangs of London, focusing on ensuring an accurate portrayal of real-life gang dynamics, their rules, language, and behaviors. It can be disappointing when shows miss the mark, as this affects the overall authenticity. At times, the focus on violence can become excessive and unnecessary.

The Inner Circle

I’ve established a level of trust with individuals who prefer to keep quiet for valid reasons. They feel comfortable confiding in me because they believe I won’t stir up trouble. It’s important to remember that while life can be cruel, not everyone is inherently cruel.
