As a seasoned gamer with years of FromSoftware titles under my belt, I must admit, the news about no immediate plans for Elden Ring 2 has left me both surprised and a tad disappointed. After immersing myself in the sprawling, intricate world of Elden Ring and its expansive Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, I can’t help but crave more. However, I understand the wisdom behind Miyazaki-san’s words – the studio needs to explore new territories, and I eagerly await their future projects across various genres.
As a devoted admirer of Elden Ring and its expansion Shadow of the Erdtree, I can’t help but marvel at the extraordinary reception both have received from critics worldwide. The success of the base game and DLC in terms of sales further underscores their appeal. It’s only logical to speculate that FromSoftware would capitalize on this heat by developing a sequel. However, it appears they might be taking a different approach.
Previously this year, the president and director of FromSoftware, Hidetaka Miyazaki, mentioned they had no intentions for an Elden Ring 2 at that moment in time. In a more recent interview with IGN Japan (translated by Automaton Media), he echoed his previous statement, confirming that currently, FromSoftware is not contemplating the development of a sequel to the critically-acclaimed open world action RPG, Elden Ring. “We aren’t seriously considering projects like an Elden Ring 2,” Miyazaki stated.
Miyazaki mentioned that although no sequel for Elden Ring is currently underway, there’s a possibility that the Elden Ring intellectual property could grow or evolve in some capacity in the future. In his own words, “We are not closing the door on the development of the Elden Ring IP in some shape or form down the line.
It’s worth noting that Miyazaki has stated there are no immediate plans for an Elden Ring 2, but FromSoftware does have several ongoing projects spanning different game genres. Additionally, the studio’s parent company, Kadokawa Corporation, is currently in discussions to be acquired by Sony.
At this year’s The Game Awards, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is up for the prestigious Game of the Year award, marking a first as an expansion to be nominated in the show’s main category. Previously, Elden Ring itself had claimed victory in the same category at the 2022 awards.
