11 Bit Studios has unveiled a fresh addition to their Frostpunk series, titled Frostpunk 1886. This new game delves back into and broadens the captivating city-building and societal survival dynamics from the original Frostpunk, all rendered in Unreal Engine 5. The release is set for PC via Steam in the year 2027.

Moving away from their proprietary Liquid Engine that drove games like Frostpunk and This War of Mine, the team has been searching for a fresh base to uphold the legacy of the initial Frostpunk game. While Frostpunk 2 is still pushing forward with free major content updates, console launch, and additional content, this newly announced project takes us back to the original franchise, providing both new players and long-time residents of New London with an advanced version of the challenging survival experience that kickstarted it all.
Titled Frostpunk 1886 in recognition of a significant event in the universe’s history, when the Great Storm hit New London, this isn’t just a cosmetic upgrade. It extends the foundation of the original game with fresh content, gameplay mechanics, laws, and what could be the most intriguing addition—a brand-new Purpose path. This provides a novel experience for even veteran players.
Refreshing Frostpunk for Unreal Engine transforms the game into a vibrant, extendable platform. This upgrade paves the way for long-desired mod support – a feature that was previously inaccessible due to the technical constraints of the original engine. Moreover, it opens up opportunities for additional downloadable content in the future.
In 2027, the game titled “Frostpunk 1886” is scheduled to be released, with development commencing as early as 2025.
