As a dedicated analyst, I’m thrilled to share that 11 bit studios, the masterminds behind Frostpunk, unveiled a new chapter in their acclaimed survival city-builder game series on Thursday. They have announced Frostpunk 1886, which signifies their return to revisit and further explore their initial concept.
Recently, it has only been a few days since 11 bit studios announced that they were working on a new installment of Frostpunk, but initially, they didn’t provide much information about it.
1886: Frostpunk is presented as a fresh take on the initial Frostpunk game, transporting players once more to oversee the only city left on Earth during a new ice age. For a sneak peek at what awaits, watch the teaser trailer for Frostpunk 1886 below:
1886’s version of Frostpunk is being constructed using Unreal Engine 5, similar to the upcoming Frostpunk 2 set for release in 2024. However, it’s not merely a remake; 11 bit studios has emphasized that there will be fresh additions, including new buildings, technologies, and even an alternative Purpose path, which serves as a replacement for the previously known Order and Faith paths.
The developers guarantee that the game will offer complete modding capabilities, enabling players to customize New London according to their preferences.
11 Bit Studios intends to release Frostpunk: 1886 sometime in 2027. Interestingly, we won’t have to wait too long for a sneak peek, as the developers plan to unveil gameplay footage during the second half of 2025.
You can add Frostpunk 1886 to your Steam wishlist right now.
Back into the ice
Initially, I wasn’t anticipating this when 11 bit studios announced another Frostpunk game was coming; however, my enthusiasm for the original game is so high that I’m ready to embrace it. Although I’ve replayed the original Frostpunk countless times, there’s a certain boundary to the variety it offers.
Expanding that game with new ideas sounds fun, and I’m looking forward to seeing more.
Absolutely, if you haven’t had a chance to play it yet, I strongly recommend giving Frostpunk 2 a try. I was truly captivated by the ambition of this sequel, and in my review, I mentioned that “Unlike its predecessor, Frostpunk 2 doesn’t just ask players to survive, but to thrive. It’s not about making it one more night; it’s about actively building for the future, either with or against the communities you’re protecting. This is a significant step, and one that 11 bit studios generally handles gracefully.”
Currently, Frostpunk 2 can be played on Windows PC (via Steam and PC Game Pass), and it’s expected to release on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 in 2025. At launch, it will also be available for subscribers of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
