Frostpunk 2 Guide – Best Initial Steps to Take to Survive

As a seasoned survivor of the frozen wastelands who’s braved countless winters in Frostpunk 1, I must say that Frostpunk 2 has been a chilling yet exhilarating adventure so far! The developers have managed to maintain the core essence while introducing new gameplay elements that keep us on our toes.

In this updated version, the long-awaited follow-up to the frostbite metropolis builder game “Frostpunk,” has officially dropped, approximately six years following its initial release. Although the fundamental idea behind the game remains consistent, Frostpunk 2 offers a fresh take with an array of novel gameplay elements and mechanisms. This tutorial provides a concise walkthrough on the optimal strategies to employ when preparing your city for survival in “Frostpunk 2.

Start Generator

As a gamer, I always ensure that my city’s power generator is one of the first things I activate at the start of a new game. Leaving it off by default can make progressing through the game more challenging than necessary!

Pause Control

Immediately, ensure you’re prepared to employ the Pause feature during your planning phase. Given the continuous progression of the game, it might swiftly escape your control while you deliberate on your subsequent actions or meticulously design your zoning districts.

Fast Forward

After giving all the tasks your people can handle, don’t hesitate to use the fast-forward feature. This will help you make the most of your gameplay time, as instead of passively watching your troops and constructors work at a slow pace, you can speed things up.

Tooltips

Most on-screen components come with helpful pop-up hints or tooltips. These not only provide more detailed information about the initial data and delve deeper into the game’s rules, but some of them even include tutorials that are worth exploring for a better understanding of the gameplay.

Frostbreaking Priority

To maximize efficiency when venturing out in such a vast territory with scattered resources, it’s crucial to prioritize your frostbreaking expeditions wisely. Start by heading towards the closest Coal deposits first, as Heat is vital for survival in your icy metropolis. Strive to minimize straight paths connecting hexes, as this can lead to navigation complications.

Heat Conservation Zoning

In zones with high heating needs, like residential or housing areas, it’s beneficial to situate them near generator or food districts for optimal efficiency. The blue heat map can serve as a useful reference. Placing three adjacent hexes to another district can help reduce heating costs.

Stockpile Coal

In your frosty settlement, Coal plays a crucial role as the primary source of energy. Therefore, it should be given top priority in terms of work distribution and investment. After establishing the Extraction District over the coal deposits, it’s essential to monitor the remaining reserves for mining, ensuring you’re prepared for future energy sources. Once resources permit, consider expanding the Extraction District to boost output. The additional construction slots that follow will house structures enhancing efficiency. Utilize these opportunities before moving on to explore the next energy deposit.

Resource Extraction Speed

Resources districts situated near abundant resource deposits won’t necessarily speed up the extraction process twice as fast. Rather, the amount of resources that are mined will be greater, with the mining taking place at the standard pace.

Food Production

Once your energy generation system is operational, focus on setting up Food Production Zones strategically, ideally near Residential Areas to benefit from the heat advantage. If feasible, also ensure there’s some surrounding space for future growth, as this will contribute to a higher overall yield in the future.

Politics

As an enthusiast, I must confess that postponing the exploration of my city’s politics might seem tempting, but sooner or later, it becomes inevitable. The construction of the Council Hall serves as a catalyst for this immersion, making it easier to navigate and understand the political landscape.

Faction Negotiations

Navigating political waters can be tricky when various groups are eager for your support while enacting new laws. Be cautious about consistently favoring one group, especially if they represent a minority of the city’s population. Leaving decisions to luck is risky; even a popular proposal could fail, tarnishing your reputation and potentially causing your downfall.

Faction Promises And Compromises

Assuring factions that their requested concessions will be fulfilled according to the set timeline, but not necessarily during the next meeting. If the proposed law is undesirable, there’s room for negotiation as the success itself was not the promise, rather the fulfillment of the commitment. By strategically delaying or scheduling promises to align with your own interests, you can gain support without incurring immediate costs.

Industrial Districts

Over time, your city could divert funds for manufacturing goods. It’s best to situate these Industrial Districts at a moderate distance from the city center, preferably near Extraction Districts. However, avoid placing them near Housing Districts because they tend to increase the risk of Disease and Squalor.

Research

It’s vital to have a Research Center for advancement, and it would be ideal to construct one as soon as our resources allow. Building it sets off the “Idea Tree,” a term similar to tech tree found in many games. Having more Research Centers will speed up research, but they aren’t crucial in the initial stages of play.

Random Events

Occasionally, unexpected events called interventions might occur, offering you opportunities to engage and make decisions that impact the loyalty of various factions. These interventions serve as a means to address factional issues beyond the scope of routine legislative activities.

District Expansion

When it’s time to build certain structures within a particular area, you might encounter restrictions due to the district being too small. This is because, in order to access additional building spaces, the district needs to encompass more hexes. It’s crucial to plan for expansion beforehand, so try not to place different districts too closely together. Instead, allow enough space for future growth.

Emergency Shifts

In certain situations, boosting overall production may not suffice to fulfill your city’s needs. Therefore, consider employing the Emergency Shift feature for specific districts when necessary. Be aware that using this function might momentarily lower trust levels, but allowing a worker to perish during an emergency shift can lead to a more significant drop in trust. Use it judiciously.

That is everything you need to know to get ahead in Frostpunk 2.
