Instead of creating more shows like “This Country”, producer Simon Mayhew-Archer is now focusing on a new comedy series that is likely to be enjoyed by fans of Kerry and Kurtan.
BBC Three’s Funboys chronicles the comedic escapades of buddies Callum, Jordan, and Lorcan as they navigate everyday life in an unremarkable town in Northern Ireland.
The four-part series, penned by Ryan Dylan and Rian Lennon – who portray characters Callum and Jordan – originated from a short film released in 2023 and shares similarities with the “offbeat” humor they appreciate, like This Country, Stath Lets Flats, and Limmy.
“And we’re just weird little guys,” added Lennon.
Similar to ‘This Country’ and ‘Stath’, the environment and the lives of these characters are largely sad and unfortunate, making it seem unlikely that humor would flourish from such circumstances.
However, that expansive landscape offered them numerous opportunities for role-play, ranging from an awkward romantic incident on a swan boat to experiencing the challenges of owning a pet pig.
Dylan mentioned, “We had a sense that our skits would be amusing, and we felt confident that we could make each other laugh.
Afterward, the focus shifted towards discovering an unusual setting – perhaps an uncharted little town, distinctly not a bustling metropolis like Belfast or Derry. It’s there that we encounter some peculiar personalities.
But the backdrop, while unremarkable, allows the writing to be the opposite.
Lennon remarked, “The humor has a touch of melodramatic seriousness about it.” For instance, consider the incident on the pedalo in the premiere episode that was handled so dramatically, it ended up causing a rift within their friend circle.
Additionally, it seems to me that when your characters are excessively dramatic, you should aim to place them in an unusually ordinary environment. This will not only serve to highlight the humor but also create a striking contrast.
As a cinephile, I’d liken its distinctive mood to a ’90s soap opera infused with a dash of offbeat humor.
The soap-like quality contributes to the extraordinary, dreamlike conversation. For instance, some of the dialogue in soaps sometimes seems unrealistic, as if no one would ever speak that way.
“And this is a similar thing. It leans into the melodrama.”

When Callum, Jordan, and Lorcan aren’t overreacting or struggling with effective emotional expression, they frequently unwind by sharing a platter of chicken nuggets and enjoying some high-quality video gaming together.
Dylan found the show delightful and heartwarming, turning ordinary moments into amusing yet endearing experiences,” he commented.
“And you kind of want to join them. They’re so inoffensive, you feel safe around them.”
In another setting, they are seated side by side atop a hill basking in sunlight, enjoying pizza and drinks.
“It’s actually nice to just do those things, we want that to come across,” added Lennon.
But most of the time, it’s carnage, with plenty of scope for more.
Lennon mentioned, “We’ve got plenty of concepts brewing for additional episodes.” He added, “After completing the last four, there was a sense that we were truly beginning to blossom in confidence with it.
We are eager for another season! If given the opportunity, I believe this next season will surpass the previous one in terms of scale, quality, and perhaps even more pig-related content!
