Funny Windows 11 bug brings back classic Windows boot sound from 20 years ago

The well-known Windows Vista start-up sound from 2006 has unexpectedly returned in the early versions of Windows 11 currently being tested. Users booting their computers after updating will hear a familiar tune from the past, as both Windows Vista and Windows 7 used this start-up sound during login.

It seems the company hasn’t specified what led to this bug, but it’s quite amusing that this issue arises at a time when Apple unveiled Liquid Glass, reminding many of Windows Vista and Aero Glass. Instead of the Windows 11 startup sound, the boot chime is heard, suggesting that the latest updates may have inadvertently omitted the Windows 11 startup sound.

It’s a mystery as to how such a bug occurred. Last week, XenoPanther on X found the issue, mentioning that the startup sound in Windows 11 has been unexpectedly replaced with the Windows Vista startup sound within the system files. To my surprise, when I booted up my computer on Saturday morning, I heard the Windows Vista boot sound again instead of the usual one for Windows 11.

Here’s what Microsoft said about the “bug” in the release notes:

  • This week’s flight comes with a delightful blast from the past and will play the Windows Vista boot sound instead of the Windows 11 boot sound. We’re working on a fix.

It’s reasonable to assume that many users would recognize the startup sound from Windows Vista through Windows 7, since they shared the same system sounds. In truth, Windows 7 bore many resemblances to Windows Vista, with some even characterizing it as an update intended to address the issues that Windows Vista faced at its launch.

For those that need the reminder, here’s the Windows Vista boot sound in all its glory.
