Funny Woman season 2 release date confirmed in first look at Gemma Arterton

As a movie reviewer with a penchant for period pieces and a soft spot for British humor, I must say that the announcement of Funny Woman season 2 has me tickled pink! Having grown up in the 60s myself, I can appreciate the authenticity that this series brings to the table.

The second season of “Funny Woman” has officially announced its airdate on Sky Max and NOW, while also sharing some initial photos from the upcoming episodes of this popular comedy-drama series.

In the 1960s, a time of significant societal transformation, Gemma Arterton portrays Barbara Parker – an actor known professionally as Sophie Straw – who strives to maintain a thriving comedy career while navigating this dynamic era.

Last year’s premiere of the first season took place in February, catching some viewers off guard as it delved deeper into dramatic elements rather than pure comedy, despite its title that might lead one to expect a comedic series.

In the upcoming sequence of events, we’ll uncover more about Sophie’s journey as “Funny Woman” comes back for its second season on Friday, 6th September 2024. You can catch it on Sky Max or stream it on NOW.

Season 2 clocks in slightly shorter than the first at four episodes rather than six.

Unseen photos reveal Arterton and her on-screen partner Arsher Ali reprising their roles as Sophie and Dennis Mahindra.

In the sequel, Sophie is basking in success as the beloved comedian on television. She’s surrounded by a close-knit circle of friends, and her relationship with Dennis appears to be thriving with potential.

However, difficulties seem imminent: Dennis’s divorce stretches over three years, Sophie’s fresh TV series fails, and she discovers a heart-wrenching family secret.

Sophie finds solace from chaos by starring alongside a popular French romantic lead in a movie. The film becomes successful, and her dynamic American representative presents her with an opportunity for a refreshing beginning in the glamorous world of Hollywood.

However, Sophie decides to head back to London, resolved on reuniting the group and crafting a fresh production that mirrors her personal experiences and contests traditional cultural norms.

Actress Roisin Conaty, known for her roles in Man Down, GameFace, and Taskmaster, is among the fresh faces joining the cast in Season 2, as depicted in the scenes below opposite Sophie Straw (played by Arterton) in what seems to be a setting from her upcoming TV sitcom.

Additionally, actors like Steve Zissis from “The Changeling,” Marcus Rutherford known for “The Wheel of Time,” Tim Key who has worked on “This Time with Alan Partridge,” and Gemma Whelan famous for “The Tower” have been added to the show.

Audience members will be excited to see actors like Rory Keenan (from Somewhere Boy), Lydia Wilson (known for About Time), Lydia Leonard (a cast member of The Crown), Jack Docherty (familiar from Scot Squad), and Josie Lawrence (featured in Father Brown) join the show as well.

In the upcoming season, not everyone will be a fresh face; instead, several familiar ones are coming back. Among these returnees are David Threlfall (known for Shameless), Rosie Cavaliero (Code 404), Alexa Davies (COBRA), Matthew Beard (Vienna Blood), Leo Bill (Becoming Elizabeth), Clare-Hope Ashitey (Top Boy), Alistair Petrie (Sex Education), Olivia Williams (The Father), Emily Bevan (The Full Monty) and Doon Mackichan (Good Omens).

Funny Woman season 2 premieres on Friday 6th September 2024 on Sky Max and NOW.
