Furiosa Wins Best Female Character (Golden Issue Awards 2024)

As a seasoned critic who’s spent decades navigating the cinematic landscape, I can confidently say that 2024 was a year that truly showcased the depth and diversity of female characters on screen. From prequels to sequels and adaptations, this year offered a rich tapestry of stories that touched our hearts and challenged our minds.

2024 was a year I’d been eagerly waiting for, as it finally delivered some of the long-gestating cinematic masterpieces from the last decade. The road wasn’t easy; Hollywood had to navigate hurdles such as the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent writers’ and actors’ strikes in previous years. But the wait was worth it! This year offered a plethora of captivating narratives, and while these stories were grandiose, what truly stood out were their deeply engaging characters. Amongst these, the most memorable female characters left a lasting impression on me.

This year, a variety of movies will grace theaters, including prequels such as “Mad Max: The Rise of Furiosa” and “A Quiet Place Origins”, sequels like “Dune: The Next Chapter” and “Inside Out 2”, and the big-screen debut of the highly acclaimed play adaptation “Wicked”. Each of these films showcased intricate characters and multilayered narratives, but the stories they told were vastly different. From characters like Furiosa, Chani, or Sam navigating treacherous circumstances, to characters such as Anxiety or Elphaba seeking their identity, the emotional journeys these characters undertook spanned a wide range. However, only one female character will be declared our favorite of 2024.

And the winner of the 2024 ComicBook Golden Issue Award for Best Female Character is…

Anya Taylor-Joy’s Furiosa from Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga!

In a nutshell, Charlize Theron’s character, Imperator Furiosa, in the 2015 film “Mad Max: Fury Road,” was not just a breakout character – she practically dominated the screen with her ingenuity and intensity, overshadowing Tom Hardy’s portrayal of Max. This made it quite a challenge for Anya Taylor-Joy to depict Furiosa’s past, given that George Miller directed both versions of the character.

As a dedicated admirer of movies like “The Witch”, “Split”, “The Northman”, and “Queen’s Gambit”, I had a strong feeling that the actress was capable. However, nothing could have fully prepared me for the incredible display of talent she showcased as Furiosa. Her performance was nothing short of extraordinary.

A significant aspect of Taylor-Joy’s portrayal in the movie is that while viewers already knew Furiosa, having seen her fully formed in Fury Road, this prequel delves into the development of the character. From being under the control of a dangerous gang to her escape, mastery of War Rigs, and ultimately seeking vengeance against Chris Hemsworth’s Dementus, the narrative unfolds the transformation of Furiosa. Not only did Miller’s script deliver on the ten-year anticipation of revealing more about how Furiosa evolved into the warrior depicted in Fury Road, but his storytelling prowess was mirrored by the intensity with which Taylor-Joy brought the role to life.

To show her commitment to the character, the actress considered balding herself like Furiosa’s iconic buzzcut; however, it was director Miller who stepped in to halt this self-sacrifice and preserve her hair.

Despite the actor’s skillful application of makeup and wigs imitating Theron’s intimidating look, Taylor-Joy immersed herself in her role to offer viewers an enthralling portrayal of a woman who faced seemingly insurmountable odds yet overcame one danger after another. The characters in this franchise must be both physically and emotionally tough due to the apocalyptic landscape they inhabit, but Miller and Taylor-Joy effectively demonstrated the character’s humanity beneath their bloodied, battered, and bruised exterior while also maintaining the thrilling momentum of the series.

For those harboring any sliver of skepticism regarding Furiosa , merely watching the film would dispel their doubts, as it became evident that Anya Taylor-Joy, George Miller, and Furiosa herself surpassed all anticipation built over the course of a decade, solidifying her status as the Most Outstanding Female Character of 2024.
