Lately, there’s been a revival in popularity for the series “Mobile Fighter G Gundam“. This is partly due to the release of a sequel novel series in Japan. Even after the conclusion of Domon’s story, the series director and co-creator, Goro Taniguchi, continues to be active in the anime industry through the anthology series “Enter The Garden”. The second installment, titled “Azuki“, became available online last month. Recently, we had a conversation with Taniguchi here at egmr.ru where he discussed this new anime and shared some critical opinions about the current status of the “Gundam” franchise.
In a recent conversation about shows such as “Gundam: The Witch From Mercury” and the upcoming “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX”, Taniguchi expressed concerns that the “Gundam” franchise has evolved into more of a commercial venture than a creative one. He further noted that the success of “Gundam” might inadvertently overshadow other mecha anime, as it may have diminished the number of robot-themed anime in Japan. Taniguchi fears that the series could become too focused on pleasing longtime fans, potentially limiting its reach and he hopes the franchise avoids this path. This is because he has observed an increase in Japanese viewers who believe they will only enjoy a mecha anime if it is a “Gundam”. Such a trend could lead to the decline of the robot genre as a whole.
Goro’s Gundam Thoughts
The director of Gundam initially expressed his goodwill towards the current team managing the series, expressing a desire to further develop the mech stories within it. He explained that originally, Gundam was one of numerous robot anime aiming to discover new avenues for expression in animation. However, he feels that now, Gundam is actually hindering other robot anime from reaching their full potential. He added that other talented creators such as Hideaki Anno (of Evangelion fame), Shoji Kawamori (director of Macross), himself who directed Code Geass, and Masami Oobari are keeping other robot anime alive with their dedication. Despite the fact that those involved in Gundam don’t want this genre to dwindle, he hopes they will keep pushing the boundaries and exploring new possibilities for the Gundam franchise.
I’m absolutely thrilled about the upcoming “GQuuuuuuX” Gundam series! It’s making a grand entrance in cinemas across Japan and North America with a compilation film, combining the initial episodes of this exciting journey. Mark your calendars because starting next month, you can catch it weekly on Amazon Video! This anime adaptation promises a fresh narrative set in the intriguing mech universe – I can’t wait to see where this new story takes us!
Goro’s Azuki Creation
Feel free to watch the second installment of “Enter The Garden” located at the top for an insightful look into Goro Taniguchi’s unparalleled skill in crafting anime. Although he has shared much about the universe of Gundam, Goro also discussed his current online project, expressing it as a means to delve deeper into the potential stories within the Azuki world. Unlike traditional narratives, Azuki lacks a defined plotline but instead embodies ideals and aspirations. It’s up to us to mold and shape its story according to our own interpretations. Essentially, working on this anime is our chance to contribute to the essence that Azuki symbolizes.
In a recent interview, the director of “Enter The Garden’s” sequel delved deeper into the new anime universe of Azuki, stating, “While Azuki doesn’t adhere to a strict narrative, it does have its own distinct setting. Preserving this world is crucial. As the series progresses, we’ve crafted episodes to gradually broaden the horizons of Azuki, surpassing what has been previously established within its defined universe. By introducing designs that significantly deviate from the current aesthetic of Azuki, our goal is to encourage those associated with Azuki to reevaluate its essence. This exploration can serve as an intriguing creative outlet.
