Following years of development, the beloved TV show “Galaxy Quest” is receiving an exciting revamp that fans will surely appreciate. In a comprehensive interview with Deadline, producer Mark Johnson (who was involved in the 1999 film) shared details about several projects he’s working on. Among them are adaptations for television of the films “Galaxy Quest” and “The Holdovers”. When asked about the status of these projects, Johnson didn’t disclose too much, but did confirm that both are underway, with writers currently working diligently on scripts. However, it’s important to note that this doesn’t necessarily mean the series have been officially approved for production yet.
“Both are being written, so we’ll see,” Johnson said.
Galaxy Quest, which debuted in 1999 and earned only $90.7 million globally against a production budget of $45 million, didn’t initially make a big splash. However, its standing has risen considerably since then, and it is now widely recognized as a cult favorite. Efforts have been made over the years to revive its popularity. A follow-up movie was in development but was halted following the sad demise of lead actor Alan Rickman, who played the memorable character Alexander Dane in the first film.
Since 2017, plans for the “Galaxy Quest” TV series have been underway at Amazon. Initially, writer Paul Scheer conceived the idea to carry forward the movie’s narrative. However, the project experienced a pause in 2018 following the dismissal of executive Amy Powell from Paramount. Revitalizing “Galaxy Quest”, it was announced in 2023 that the series is being developed at Paramount+.
It appears that the Galaxy Quest series has some unfinished tasks before it takes flight, but it’s heartening to know the project is still alive and kicking. The film has been praised as a clever spoof and tribute to Star Trek, with fans even ranking it among the best Star Trek movies ever produced. Galaxy Quest was indeed a visionary work for its time. At that point in pop culture, fandom was in a completely different landscape, but with the rise of superhero films, the revival of Star Wars, the reboot of Star Trek, and more, what was once considered niche “geek culture” has gained mainstream acceptance. This opens up exciting possibilities for insightful commentary using the Galaxy Quest concept. As long as it maintains the same tone as the movie, the TV series could be a captivating project that fans will eagerly embrace.
It’s intriguing to speculate when the Galaxy Quest series might take flight. Johnson didn’t provide insights into the progress of the scriptwriting, and it seems the studio won’t greenlight it until they receive completed scripts and have a sense of its direction. The concept of Galaxy Quest should adapt effortlessly to TV, so the writing crew shouldn’t struggle to produce something engaging and emotional. The main concern, if the show is indeed a sequel to the film, is how they’ll tackle Alexander Dane. With Rickman’s unparalleled portrayal, it’s hard to imagine Galaxy Quest without him, making this a challenge the creative team must conquer.
