Game of the Year: #6 – Silent Hill 2

As a lifelong horror gaming enthusiast who has braved countless nights with the lights off and the volume cranked up, I can confidently say that Silent Hill 2 is not just a remake, but an unparalleled masterpiece that perfectly encapsulates the essence of fear in the digital realm.

Initially, we were somewhat apprehensive about the prospect of Silent Hill 2, a PS2 classic, getting a remake, considering Bloober Team’s past projects hadn’t quite solidified their reputation. Rebuilding such a revered horror game wasn’t exactly a sure thing. However, Bloober managed to silence all the doubters by crafting not just an accurate and devoted remake, but one of the top games released in 2024.

From an older, shoulder-viewing angle, Silent Hill 2 masterfully recreates its famous town with remarkable detail. On PS5, this game stands out as one of the most visually stunning, featuring peeling paint, corroded metal, and the constant mist that hides the unsettlingly quiet town. Yet, it’s what Silent Hill 2 chooses not to display that truly impresses us.

This game is exceptionally dark, both figuratively and literally. The darkness can be overpowering at times, but it harmonizes beautifully with excellent sound effects and top-notch tactile feedback. It’s the kind of game that you should experience in a dimly lit room with headphones to fully immerse yourself. As you cautiously navigate through some legendary backdrops, your mannequin-like adversaries creep along the walls, leaving only brief glimpses of movement when your flashlight is used — it’s a heart-pounding experience indeed.

What stands out most in Bloober’s endeavors is their ability to revamp the gameplay significantly and add new areas, yet they scarcely alter the main storyline. This is a brilliant demonstration of adapting a timeless game for contemporary audiences. They enhance the aspects that have become dated while preserving those that remain effective. It’s nothing short of masterful.
