As an avid gamer with over two decades of gaming experience under my belt, I can confidently say that 2024 was a banner year for DLC releases on the PlayStation 5. Each of these nominees brought something unique and captivating to their respective games, but if I had to pick just one, it would be Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.
Having sunk countless hours into Elden Ring, I can attest that the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion not only lived up to the hype but exceeded it in every possible way. The level design was masterful, with a focus on verticality that kept me guessing as to how far down I could go. It was a true testament to the skill and creativity of the developers, and I found myself constantly amazed at the secrets and twisting paths I encountered.
When it comes to DLC, I believe that less is often more – but in this case, more was definitely more! Shadow of the Erdtree added enough content to make me feel like I had a whole new game to explore. It’s rare for an expansion to raise the bar for what we expect from DLC, but Shadow of the Erdtree did just that, and then some.
As for my fellow gamers, it seems that Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree was also a favorite among many of you. It’s no wonder why – with its stunning visuals, immersive gameplay, and captivating storyline, Shadow of the Erdtree is a must-play for any fan of the Elden Ring universe.
And to wrap things up, I’ll leave you with this little joke: Why don’t DLCs ever get lost? Because they always stick to their main games!

Bronze Trophy: Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred
In the realm of live games, expansions don’t just offer new material; they can breathe life back into a waning player base. For instance, the Vessel of Hatred expansion revitalized Diablo 4 by capitalizing on its ongoing seasonal content updates, significantly enhancing the overall gameplay experience. With the Vessel of Hatred expansion integrated into Diablo 4, Blizzard’s title has never been more engaging.

Silver Trophy: Final Fantasy XVI: The Rising Tide
In simpler terms, “The Rising Tide,” which is the second and primary expansion for Final Fantasy XVI, beautifully concludes Square Enix’s role-playing game in a fitting manner. It delves deeper into the universe’s lore with a storyline set towards the end of the main narrative. Additionally, it enhances the combat system, offering more complex strategies and mind-blowing boss battles. Essentially, “The Rising Tide” brings Final Fantasy XVI to its ultimate completion.

Gold Trophy: Destiny 2: The Final Shape
After the release of The Final Form expansion for Destiny 2, there seems to be a shift in public opinion about Bungie once more. However, the content within this expansion temporarily elevated Destiny 2 to the top of the looter shooter genre again. It was highly praised for its compelling campaign, difficult raid, and emotional final mission that resonated deeply with players. Unfortunately, subsequent events – both in-game and behind the scenes – have led to a decline in overall satisfaction. Nevertheless, The Final Form managed to restore Destiny 2’s status as a top-tier looter shooter.

Platinum Trophy: Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
As a gaming enthusiast, I can confidently say that if categorized correctly, Shadow of the Erdtree would have easily taken the crown as the finest PS5, PS4 DLC of 2024. The amount of content it delivered was so substantial that other studios might’ve considered it worthy of a standalone sequel. In essence, The Realm of Shadow expanded upon Elden Ring, making it feel like I was diving even deeper into one of the best PS5, PS4 games out there – and let me tell you, that’s not something to scoff at!
Instead of focusing on expansive horizontal terrain, Shadow of the Erdtree cleverly opted for vertical exploration, leaving players in awe with hidden secrets and intricate pathways that make you wonder how deep it goes rather than its linear distance. In every conceivable aspect, this DLC is nothing short of extraordinary, raising the bar even higher for future expansions.
