As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the indie scene continues to be a shining beacon of innovation and creativity in the world of video games. This year on PS5, we’ve seen some truly outstanding indie titles, each offering unique experiences that cater to various tastes.
In addition to our “Game of the Year” top 10 list and individual recommendations from the Push Square editorial team, we are also highlighting the standout PS5 games from 2024 in various categories. Today, we’re focusing on the “best independent PS5 game of 2024”.
Bronze Trophy: Crypt Custodian
Instead of ascending to heaven upon death, you might find yourself assigned as a caretaker in the afterlife, tasked with sweeping it up using a broom while also transforming into a cat. This quirky premise sets the stage for Crypt Custodian, a standout Metroidvania title from this year. The gameplay seamlessly blends action and platforming elements, making every moment enjoyable. As you progress, you unlock new paths with newly acquired abilities, ensuring that backtracking remains interesting. Overall, the game’s whimsical charm perfectly illustrates the ongoing brilliance of the indie gaming scene.

Silver Trophy: Thank Goodness You’re Here!
Wow, What a Hoot! This game we recently played is simply hilarious, and it manages to be so effortlessly amusing that it deserves recognition. In essence, it resembles a point-and-click adventure, where you can only jump and smack things, but these actions lead to continuous humor in dialogue and scenes. The cartoonish Yorkshire town of Barnsworth is remarkably realistic, and its quirky inhabitants make it feel like a genuine place. The presentation is spot on, the voice acting is superb, and the British humor, while unconventional, strikes the right chord throughout. It may not be the most intellectually stimulating game, but it’s undeniably one of the funniest we’ve played this year.

Gold Trophy: Nine Sols
Red Candle Games has transformed Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice into a 2D Metroidvania style game, resulting in one of this year’s standout independent titles. Although it can be challenging, persevere and you’ll find yourself immersed in a thrilling journey filled with exceptional combat, captivating visuals, and a surprisingly engaging narrative. To make things even better, the soundtrack is top-notch too! So instead of agonizing over Hollow Knight: Silksong release date, jump into one of the finest Metroidvania games that’s available right now.

Platinum Trophy: Balatro
Balatro, the buzzworthy indie game from 2024, has captured everyone’s attention for a good reason – it’s phenomenally well-designed. Initially, this roguelike card game appears straightforward, using a standard deck of 52 cards. However, as you progress, it transforms into something much more intricate and captivating. The game introduces an array of synergistic systems and items, which work harmoniously to turn your deck into a formidable points-earning tool. The thrill of constructing a game-changing deck and witnessing all the multipliers and effects in action is immensely gratifying, and you’ll find yourself constantly seeking more opportunities to experience that rush of dopamine. With its endless replayability, hypnotic addictiveness, and constant introduction of new cards and play styles, it’s no surprise that Balatro has earned the title of our top indie game of the year. It easily ranks among the best games of 2024 overall.
