Game of the Year: Best PS5 Remake or Remaster of 2024

As a long-time gamer with memories of playing these games on their original platforms, I must say that 2024 has been a fantastic year for remakes and remasters on PS5. The quality of these reimagined classics has truly brought back nostalgic feelings while also offering fresh experiences.

Starting off with Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, Nixxes’ work has been nothing short of remarkable. I remember playing the original game seven years ago and being amazed by its graphics, but now it’s on another level thanks to this remaster. The PS5 Pro version is simply stunning, making it one of the best-looking games on Sony’s console.

Persona 3 Reload also impressed me with Atlus’ excellent job in remaking this classic JRPG. Bringing back SEES was a genius move that introduced this game to a new audience after Persona 5 sold gangbusters. The quality-of-life improvements help enhance the game, and the dungeon crawling is addictive.

But the true highlight of 2024 has been Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. I’ve always been a fan of the original title, and this remake breathes fresh life into memorable locations like Cosmo Canyon and Gongaga to an astonishingly high quality. It may have its critics, but it’s impossible to look past Final Fantasy VII Rebirth being one of 2024’s best remakes.

However, the Platinum Trophy must go to Silent Hill 2. I was skeptical about Bloober Team’s ability to do justice to this horror masterpiece, but they proved me wrong. The PS5 remake of Silent Hill 2 is a genuine Game of the Year contender that resurrects the story just as it was first written in 2001. It offers more explorative opportunities and new ideas while remaining faithful to the original game.

To end on a lighter note, I’d like to say that if these remakes could bring back my old gaming memories so vividly, I can only imagine what the next generation of gamers will think when they play these classics for the first time!

In addition to our Top 10 “Game of the Year” selections and individual recommendations from the Push Square editorial staff, we’re highlighting the standout PS5 games from 2024 in various categories. Today, we’re focusing on the top pick for the “best PS5 remake or remaster” of 2024.

Bronze Trophy: Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered

Initially, there was reluctance towards the project when it was just a rumor, but as demonstrated by the Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, many skeptics have been proven wrong. In 2024, this remaster stands out as an excellent representation of what a remaster can accomplish. Nixxes has significantly upgraded Guerrilla Games’ work, making it visually comparable to Forbidden West, and the PS5 Pro takes it to even greater heights. The game now ranks among the best-looking on Sony’s console, which is quite remarkable given that it was first released seven years ago.

Silver Trophy: Persona 3 Reload

2024 has been a spectacular year for Atlus, with Metaphor: ReFantazio garnering much praise, but let’s not overlook the fantastic job they did revamping Persona 3. Reviving SEES to combat the creatures of the Dark Hour was a stroke of genius, giving this classic PS2 title a fresh lease of life and making it accessible to a new generation following the success of Persona 5. The dungeon exploration is engaging, the updated graphics are stunning, and the improvements in gameplay mechanics make this JRPG shine even brighter than before. Atlus, how about considering a remake for Persona 4 next?

Gold Trophy: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

In simpler terms, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth isn’t a direct replica of the original game like some might expect. Instead, it carries on the spirit of the classic PS1 game while offering something fresh and expanded. Square Enix has given beloved locations like Cosmo Canyon and Gongaga a new lease of life in an open-zone format. While many familiar elements are still present, they’ve been enlarged and enhanced, much like the first part of the remake project. Despite any criticisms it may receive, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth stands out as one of the best remakes to look forward to in 2024.

Platinum Trophy: Silent Hill 2

It wasn’t just a question in some minds when Bloober Team took on the task of remaking Silent Hill 2; many were skeptical due to their previous work. Including ourselves, you probably had your doubts too. Yet, we couldn’t be more thrilled to have been so mistaken about our initial apprehensions.

In a fresh take on the original, the PS5 version of Silent Hill 2 meticulously recreates the terrifying masterpiece from the PS2 era, adding depth and innovation to create one of the standout titles of 2024. This game is a strong candidate for Game of the Year, with Bloober Team collaborating closely with Konami to produce something truly exceptional. The narrative, as written in 2001, is brought back to life. The eerie town remains familiar, but has been expanded upon in certain areas to provide more exploration and novel concepts. Essentially, Silent Hill 2 on PS5 is a blend of the classic game and a modernized remake – a testament to how reimagining can breathe new life into a beloved source material while staying true to its essence. This remake stands out as the best of 2024.
