Game of Thrones Fans Are Losing It Over This New Record

The prolonged anticipation for “The Winds of Winter” has been a common topic for quite some time, but it recently surpassed a disappointing milestone: marking the longest gap between books in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series to date. Author George R.R. Martin’s writing speed has gradually decreased since he released the first book in 1996. This slowdown led to nearly six years separating the fourth book, “A Feast for Crows,” from the fifth book, “A Dance with Dragons,” both of which were published in 2011—the year HBO’s “Game of Thrones” debuted on television. Since then, Martin has published two companion books related to the series; however, even considering those publications, the wait time has now reached an unprecedented six years and four months.

The epic series known as A Song of Ice and Fire initially followed a compact structure, with the first three books – A Game of Thrones, published in August 1996, A Clash of Kings in February 1999, and A Storm of Swords in November 2000 – released fairly close together. However, George R.R. Martin significantly revised his story’s future direction, leading to a five-year gap before the release of book four, A Feast for Crows, in November 2005. The wait continued with the longest delay yet for book five, A Dance with Dragons, published in July 2011. Reflecting on discussions from fan forums of old, fans found this five-year, eight-month wait unbearable, and they braced themselves at the thought of any further delays in the series.

Readers have eagerly awaited “The Winds of Winter” for a staggering 14 years now, and while they may not have the main book yet, there have been some compensatory rewards along the way. In October of 2014, we were gifted with the comprehensive guidebook titled “The World of Ice and Fire“, and in November of 2018, we received another fictional history book called “Fire & Blood“. If you include these supplementary volumes, this wait for a new book has been unparalleled since the series began. As content creator Quinn the GM recently highlighted, by the time this is published, it will have been 6 years and 4 months since “Fire & Blood” was released on shelves. Intriguingly, as of June 2024, this will mark our longest wait ever for a new book in the series.

As we eagerly anticipate what’s to come in Martin’s ongoing tale, some readers might not include Fire & Blood in their initial count. While this book offers fresh lore and serves as the foundation for House of the Dragon, it can’t replace the author’s complete storyline. The author himself has hinted that his final story will deviate from the ending of Game of Thrones, and fans are hoping this means a more fulfilling and logical conclusion.

However, some enthusiasts could arguably classify “The Rise of the Dragon” as a fresh release. Debuting in 2022, this book essentially repackages content from “Fire & Blood“, offering it with a distinct presentation and an abundance of illustrations. Essentially, there’s no new content to offer; the anticipation remains unfulfilled.

Latest on The Winds of Winter

As a movie critic, I can’t help but share my disappointment over the latest news about “The Winds of Winter.” George R.R. Martin himself addressed this in his blog post on April 7th, expressing his weariness from having to refute rumors every time a casual comment he makes is misconstrued as an impending release for the book. Let me make it clear: It’s not coming out anytime soon. No, absolutely not. (Perhaps I should think twice before making such comments.)

The update from Martin about his book may not have been what fans were eagerly anticipating, but he continues to emphasize that it’s a top priority for him. He made significant strides in 2020 and 2021, yet hasn’t shared much detail since then. It’s unclear if this prolonged wait – the longest delay in the series so far – will motivate Martin to complete the book sooner, but fans can still enjoy his previous works which are available in print, digital, and audiobook formats.

In other news, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is set to air this year on HBO, while “House of the Dragon” Season 3 is expected in 2026. If you haven’t seen them yet, previous seasons are currently streaming on Max, along with “Game of Thrones”.
