It seems that the Phoebe Waller-Bridge Amazon Tomb Raider series has come to an end. The much-anticipated reboot, initially seen as a major project for Prime Video, is now apparently cancelled. With this development, another episode concludes in the costly and lengthy story of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s $100 million deal without any delivered content.

In November, there were reports that Sophie Turner, known for her roles in “Game of Thrones” and “Dark Phoenix”, was close to securing the role of Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider series. Although Amazon hasn’t made an official announcement, various sources named Turner as the leading candidate for the iconic role. However, according to Mail Online (via GameFragger), these plans have been canceled. The project is said to be “dead” because of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s slow script development and Sophie Turner’s other ongoing commitments.
Under the leadership of former Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke, the project initially conceived as a grand, worldwide adventure series was intended to be a significant part of Amazon’s high-cost intellectual property (IP) plan. However, that grand scheme has unfortunately collapsed.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, renowned for “Fleabag” and controversy surrounding “Indiana Jones,” secured a $20 million annual contract with Amazon in 2019, which reportedly cost the studio $100 million in total but produced no shows or films. When this deal ended in 2022, Salke renewed it. And prior to her departure in 2025, she transformed it into a non-exclusive “first look” agreement for significantly less money.

Still, that’s six years, over $100 million, and nothing produced.
Initially, the Amazon reboot of “Tomb Raider” was expected to be a groundbreaking streaming hit for Waller-Bridge; however, just like other costly projects from the streaming service – such as “Citadel” and “The Rings of Power” – it failed to gain traction even before its release.
As a follower, I’m thrilled to express that Tomb Raider has significantly shaped my journey. I consider myself truly blessed to be part of its transition to television. I eagerly anticipate embarking on this exciting expedition, bats included!
Instead, the bats are staying in the cave — and the series is never happening.

Simultaneously, fans were already expressing surprise about Turner’s role assignment. Although she garnered praise for her performance in ITV’s “Joan,” the Amazon’s “Tomb Raider” series would have been her debut as the leading character in a significant action series. Given that Angelina Jolie, Alicia Vikander, and Hayley Atwell had previously portrayed the character in films and animations, Turner would have had to step into some quite iconic footsteps.
Now, that’s no longer a concern.

In other words, what exactly did Amazon gain from their years-long collaboration with Waller-Bridge? They received one successful show (Fleabag, which was licensed from the BBC), a terminated Tomb Raider series, and an extremely costly lesson that celebrity influence doesn’t necessarily lead to productivity.
