GameCube Classic Chibi-Robo Getting Spiritual Successor from Original Developers

As a long-time fan of the Chibi-Robo series, I’m thrilled to hear that Tiny Wonder Studio is creating a spiritual successor called koROBO. It brings back so many memories of playing the original games on various Nintendo consoles and connecting with the quirky little robot character. I’m excited that many of the original developers are returning, including directors Kenichi Nishi and Hiroshi Moriyama, composer Hirofumi Taniguchi, artist Hikarin, and Chibi-Robo Zip-Lash director Keita Eto. Their involvement ensures that koROBO will capture the heart and feel of the series.

Back in 2005, Nintendo in collaboration with Skip, Ltd., introduced “Chibi-Robo!” on GameCube. Over the next ten years, this small robot character made appearances in numerous games for different Nintendo systems. Regrettably, since the launch of “Chibi-Robo! Zip-Lash” in 2015, there has been no news from Nintendo about reviving the series. Sadly, Skip, Ltd., the original developer, is now defunct. However, some team members have formed Tiny Wonder Studio and are working on a game that pays homage to “Chibi-Robo!” The upcoming title, named “koROBO,” will serve as an spiritual successor to the beloved series.

Similar to numerous other games that pay homage to classics, koROBO is set to replicate many cherished aspects. In this title, gamers assume the position of a miniature robot, tasked with managing everyday chores in a household. Duties encompass cleaning and nurturing plants. However, this bot requires regular charging to function optimally, and it needs sunlight to replenish its solar battery. Adding a humorous touch, koROBO‘s robot is not an expensive or advanced model; instead, it’s a cheap imitation (hence the “ko” in the game’s title). This innovative spin on the spiritual successor concept is sure to bring laughter and nostalgia!

Original: Veteran team members from the earlier Chibi-Robo! games, such as directors Kenichi Nishi and Hiroshi Moriyama, composer Hirofumi Taniguchi, artist Hikarin, and Zip-Lash’s director Keita Eto, are back for koROBO. Given the involvement of numerous individuals who have been closely linked to the series, it appears likely that koROBO will successfully recreate the charm and essence of Chibi-Robo! In a public statement, Nishi announced plans for a forthcoming Kickstarter campaign for the game.

Nishi aims to develop a game called “koROBO” that brings joy to all, making it a warm and inviting experience. At its heart, “koROBO” fosters unity and progress towards a brighter future. This campaign is an excellent chance for video game enthusiasts to unite, an accomplishment our small hero would be pleased with. Together, we can turn the future into a cherished reality.

The “koROBO” Kickstarter initiative is set to commence on July 22nd and conclude on August 23rd. The creators plan to introduce the game to PCs and contemporary gaming consoles. A Switch adaptation has not been announced yet, but considering the fanbase for this title is primarily Nintendo enthusiasts, there’s a strong possibility it will be released on that platform as well. However, the availability of a Switch version may hinge on the success of the Kickstarter campaign. For more details about the campaign, please click here.
