Gamescom boss talks Geoff Keighley, Opening Night Live expectations and more

As a seasoned film enthusiast and lifelong gamer, I have to say that the story behind Geoff Keighley’s involvement with Gamescom is nothing short of magical. It all started with an unexpected email, a simple gesture that sparked a partnership that has since electrified the gaming community.

It started with an email.

Have you pondered over how Geoff Keighley, known for hosting the dazzling Game Awards in Los Angeles, came to host an event in Cologne, Germany? Well, it turns out, the circumstances were straightforward.

Prior to the 2024 event of the massive gaming convention he oversees, Felix Falk, head of the German Games Industry Association (Game), sat down for a chat with TopMob.

The complete video of this conversation is available for viewing in the player located above, or you can find it on the TopMob Gaming YouTube channel.

You’ll find a captivating summary of the 2021 Gamescom events starting tonight at 7 PM British Standard Time, during their Opening Night Live broadcast.

Among the topics discussed with Falk was the subject of Geoff Keighley, a personality who not only hosts Summer Game Fest but has essentially become the industry’s primary face in recent times. Could you describe your experience collaborating with someone as esteemed as Geoff?

Falk told us: “He’s not just an institution, but he’s a great guy.

As a cinephile, I immediately took a liking to him during our initial encounter in LA. To be honest, I might not have shared this before, but he unexpectedly sent me an email expressing his fondness for Gamescom, simply wanting to keep me informed.

“So there wasn’t anything connected, it was just a really nice email.

After that, we decided it was time to meet him and discuss our long-held idea. He seemed like the ideal candidate for the role. Our conversation concluded at Gamescom Opening Night Live event.

Indeed, he’s an outstanding individual. He’s exceptionally responsive, as you can imagine. When small independent studios express, “We have this concept, we might pitch it at Gamescom,” he dedicates time for everyone and responds promptly, scrutinizes the ideas, and often suggests, “This project deserves a spot in the Gamescom Opening Night Live.”

“This collaboration has been fantastic since it began in 2019, and our audience has significantly grown over the years. Now, we have countless individuals joining us for Gamescom Opening Night Live, and that number keeps increasing.”

According to Falk’s statement, we can anticipate that this year’s Gamescom Opening Night Live event should be quite impressive.

Previously, during last year’s event, Geoff had set expectations low by mentioning that there weren’t numerous new world premieres at the time. However, what transpired was an exceptional show, featuring content from previously announced games that hadn’t been revealed before. This made the event particularly intriguing.

As someone who has been following this topic closely for years, I am genuinely excited about the upcoming announcements. Not only are we expected to see some familiar developments, but there is also a hint of something fresh and exciting in store. I believe that this week will be an excellent starting point for new discoveries and insights, building upon the knowledge I have accumulated over time.

From a moviegoer’s perspective, here’s my take on what to anticipate on the show floor for Gamescom attendees this year: According to Falk, there will be several fresh zones unveiled this time around.

For instance, we’ve added a section called “Cards & Boards Zone,” showcasing trading cards and other game-related items in an extensive manner. This includes our latest collaborations, making it an engaging experience for enthusiasts of the gaming culture.

In our designated Artists’ Zone, talented game artists showcase and sell their unique creations. Notably, they also offer custom portraits, painting individuals according to their distinct artistic styles. This should prove to be an engaging experience!

“Perhaps we should also mention a third aspect, our Social Platform. Given that creators are increasingly influential in the gaming world, we’ve developed this platform specifically for them. It hosts events such as signings, speed runs, charity initiatives, and live shows.”

“So I think that will be also fun and something new,” Falk said in closing.

If asked, Falk would recommend that Gamescom attendees explore the Indie Area, as it’s a great place to uncover fresh video games and potentially interact with their creators.

We’ll bring you more coverage from Gamescom in the days, weeks and months to come!
