There still might be hope for another entry in franchise.
During a chat about his latest Netflix action movie titled “Havoc”, director Gareth Evans disclosed that he once conceived an idea for a third installment of “The Raid” series, but later abandoned it. Yet, several years ago, fresh inspiration struck him upon reconnecting with leading actor Iko Uwais in Indonesia. He expressed, “We frequently exchange messages through WhatsApp, but this was the first time I’d seen him for a long while. And every time I see Iko, due to our history and the projects we’ve collaborated on, I view him as my younger sibling. But, catching up with him after a seven-year gap, I was amazed by how much he had developed, matured, and gained various life experiences.
After our recent gathering, an idea for The Raid 3 has sparked within me like a cinematic epiphany. It hasn’t escaped my mind entirely; there might be room for revisiting this topic. If I were to tackle it, I would ensure it’s the perfect fit, crafting the right narrative for this iconic film.
In 2011, the film “The Raid: Redemption” was launched, known as “The Raid” in Indonesia. This action-packed movie centered around Indonesian police officer Rama (Uwais), who along with his team, aimed to apprehend a ruthless crime lord. However, things went awry when they were trapped in the crime lord’s apartment fortress, leading them to fight their way through various underlings to stay alive. Following this film, Evans produced a sequel titled “The Raid 2,” where Rama infiltrated a criminal syndicate with the goal of dismantling their operations amidst an escalating gang war between several underworld figures. Both films garnered critical acclaim for their raw action sequences and distinctive focus on Pencak Silat martial arts, although the first “Raid” movie later earned recognition from critics, as its narrative revolved around a similar premise of infiltrating an apartment building.
After “The Raid 2”, Evans has moved on to direct the horror film “Apostle” and take up a role as a corrupt cop tasked with safeguarding a questionable mayoral candidate’s son, who is falsely accused of murdering several Triad members. Additionally, he co-created the TV series “Gangs of London”, which recently concluded its third season. Simultaneously, Uwais has been seen in movies such as “Beyond Skyline”, “The Night Comes For Us”, and “Snake Eyes”, and also made a cameo appearance alongside his “The Raid” co-stars Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman in 2015.
Havoc Reviews Are Mixed
At the moment of this write-up, it has a generally favorable Rotten Tomatoes score of 66%, but a lower rating from audiences. Apart from Havoc, Hardy is also appearing in the Paramount+ series MobLand alongside Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren, co-starring with them.
Havoc is currently available to stream on Netflix.
