Gargoyles Live-Action Reboot: HUGE Update!

2023 saw reports of Disney+ working on a live-action remake of the ’90s animated series centered around the Gargoyles, a group that includes mighty Goliath, wise Hudson, tech-savvy Lexington, quick-witted Brooklyn, burly Broadway, Bronx the beast (who resembles a dog), and later, Goliath’s daughter, Angela. These stone creatures were put under a magical sleep for a millennium but have since awakened in contemporary Manhattan. By day, they are statues; by night, they transform into warriors, safeguarding New York City alongside their human ally, Detective Elisa Maza of the N.Y.P.D.

As stated by Gary Dauberman, who serves as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner for the live-action reboot of Gargoyles, Disney continues to work diligently on launching the series.

In my excitement, I can’t help but feel that we’ve essentially brought the animated series to life. The cartoon is just phenomenal, and it was this very quality that captured our hearts. I truly believe it translates beautifully into a thrilling live-action adaptation.

Translating the animated series Gargoyles into live-action promises to be a complex task, Dauberman notes, but he’s in discussions with some exceptional individuals. We aim to preserve that ominous tone. I can’t wait to witness this dark fantasy unfold in real life.

The animated series “Gargoyles” aired for three seasons from 1994 to 1997, consisting of 78 episodes in total. A 11-issue Marvel Comics series was also launched in 1995. As recently as 2022, the story of the Manhattan Clan has been continued in a new Dynamite comic book series written by Greg Weisman, one of the show’s creators and producers. However, Dauberman is reluctant to discuss specifics regarding whether the live-action adaptation will be based on any particular storyline.

Dauberman, the screenwriter who’s turned Stephen King’s works and ‘Until Dawn’ video game into movies, expresses his deep affection for Disney, saying, ‘I believe it would overwhelm me. I’m such a devoted admirer of their shows, and there’s so much quality in them.’

As an observer, I’ve noticed Dauberman comparing his creative process across different projects. When it comes to originating something entirely new like adapting Stephen King’s work or a horror video game, he has to create from scratch. However, when working on a beloved series like Gargoyles, he emphasizes that he’s not striving to re-invent the wheel; instead, fans of the show can expect a satisfying continuation.

Disney Television is working on the revival of “Gargoyles”, teaming up with James Wan and Michael Clear from Atomic Monster, who were also involved in the production of the 2019 television series adaptation of “Swamp Thing”. The latter was co-written by Scott Bryan Dauberman, whose past works include screenplays for successful spinoffs like “Annabelle” and “The Nun” from “Conjuring”, as well as producing Sony’s film “Until Dawn”.
