Fortunately, Cadence also harbors similar feelings, going so far as to call him “‘the one who would alter everything.’
In the summer of 16, or as it became known as Cadence’s pivotal accident season in “We Were Liars”, Gat and Cadence began to express their feelings towards each other. Cadence found herself captivated by a newfound charisma and assurance from Gat that she had never witnessed before, which led her to fall deeply in love with him. Over time, they shared a kiss, but this moment was the last clear memory Cadence retained before enduring a severe brain injury.
As she worked on recalling past events, Cadence uncovered that Gat was in a relationship with Raquel Diaz, which caused their rift. Yet, their deep emotions toward each other persisted. However, when Cadence sustained an injury, neither Gat nor the others were around to support her healing process for over a year.
Following numerous unexpected events, it was ultimately disclosed in the conclusion of “We Were Liars” what had transpired to the characters, except for Cadence. It was revealed that Gat, Mirren, and Johnny perished in a fire they ignited together with Cadence on one of the Summer 16 nights.
Instead of burning down the Clairmont mansion (or their grandfather’s mansion), the deceitful ones attempted to sever the Sinclair family ties by setting it ablaze, but tragically, this act resulted in the deaths of three of the liars and left Cadence with a debilitating lifelong injury. This unforeseen turn of events proved disastrous for their plan.
Although the unexpected turn of events in the story leaves viewers shocked and saddened, there remains a glimmer of hope centered around the evolving bond between characters Gat and Cadence during their respective summers, namely years 16 and 17.
Since Gat isn’t part of the Sinclair family, it’s beneficial that he occasionally points out their sense of privilege and excessive behavior towards others. He recognizes unfairness quickly, and Cadence often catches on to this observation when they’re together.
In the novel “We Were Liars,” it’s significant that Gat and Cadence spend time together, regardless if they’re friends or something more, as this dynamic encourages Cadence to develop personally and bring about substantial transformation within herself.
Despite Gat’s demise, there remains a lingering essence of him within Cadence, as she embarked on her own journey by severing connections with the Sinclair clan, weary of their deceit and scheming.
How Are Gat and Cadence Related, Exactly?

In the intricate family lineage portrayed in “We Were Liars”, Cadence is related to the Sinclairs as follows: She’s the child born from Penny Sinclair’s marriage, making her the granddaughter of Harris and Tipper Sinclair, and the niece of Bess and Carrie Sinclair.
