Supporters of the popular series Gavin & Stacey are expressing disappointment as the show received merely two nominations at this year’s British Academy Television Awards, even though its final episode on Christmas Day garnered a tremendous reaction.
As a devoted film enthusiast, I’ve eagerly anticipated the return of my beloved sitcom for five long years, and finally, it delivered on the question that had been lingering in our minds since Nessa (Ruth Jones) popping the question to Smithy (James Corden). At last, these cherished characters got their well-deserved happy ending.
Approximately 19 million people watched the extended episode in its initial week of release, and many critics praised it as a fitting conclusion for one of Britain’s most cherished sitcoms.
Some devoted fans have criticized the fact that the show was not nominated in the Scripted Comedy category and the Male Performance in a Comedy category, labeling it as illogical or absurd, according to media commentator Scott Bryan.
In the category of Best Female Performance in a Comedy, Ruth Jones has been nominated. The only other recognition for Gavin & Stacey comes from the audience-voted Memorable Moment category, which spotlights a poignant scene featuring Mick (played by Larry Lamb), who expresses his disapproval of Smithy’s wedding.
Compares a particular moment with the following scenes: the tension of Bridgerton season 3’s carriage scene, the shock value of Rivals’ game of nude tennis, Chris McCausland’s dance to You’ll Never Walk Alone on Strictly Come Dancing, Diane’s surprising revelation on The Traitors season 2, and Jo Hamilton’s emotional call to the Horizon helpline in Mr. Bates vs The Post Office.
This version maintains the original’s tone while using simpler language to make it easier for readers to understand.
Entertainer journalist Boyd Hilton expressed on social media platforms his astonishment, stating it was “absolutely extraordinary” or “incredibly surprising,” that Gavin & Stacey hadn’t received a nomination in the Scripted Comedy category.
A different user of X suggested that while the series “Ludwig” is indeed an excellent choice for viewing, it might not be entirely fitting within the Scripted Comedy category because of its significant dramatic components.
At recent American award ceremonies like the Emmys, a debate about classification has surfaced, particularly concerning the series “The Bear” being placed in comedic categories. Some spectators find it objectionable given the show’s increasingly somber demeanor.
A different user suggested broadening the categories in order to give more series an opportunity to contend, since increasing the number of nominations to around five or six might have enabled both Gavin & Stacey and Ludwig to secure a spot within the Scripted Comedy category.
Previously, there has been a similar situation where the Academy Awards expanded their Best Picture category in 2009, due to criticism and disappointment caused by exclusions in previous years.
On Sunday, 11th May 2025, the BAFTA TV Awards will be broadcast live, and the esteemed actor and television personality, Alan Cumming, has been chosen as the host for this grand event.
