Gavin & Stacey star on fishing trip non-reveal: ‘That’s always been the joke’

As a devoted fan of Gavin & Stacey, I must confess that the lingering mystery surrounding Uncle Bryn and nephew Jason’s fishing trip has become as much a part of my life as the show itself. The suspense is like a tantalizing morsel dangled just out of reach, leaving me longing for the satisfaction of finally knowing what happened on that fateful expedition.

It appears that fans of Gavin & Stacey are destined never to know the outcome of Uncle Bryn’s (Rob Brydon) and nephew Jason’s (Robert Wilfort) fateful fishing adventure, as the show offers no further explanation about their whereabouts.

In the final episode of the popular BBC comedy series, the topic was subtly revisited, hinting at certain aspects while another disruption prevented us from learning the full story.

In this instance, it was Dave (played by Steffan Rhodri) who let the secret out, feeling compelled to do so as a means of demonstrating his recent affection for Gwen (portrayed by Melanie Walters).

Unfortunately, there wasn’t much new information shared, as Dave primarily summarized that Bryn and Jason were camping, it was quite chilly, and soup was simmering. However, their conversation was interrupted by a heated pan that Gwen had carelessly left on the stove.

At the unveiling of the final episode, the actor who portrays Jason, Wilfort, expressed: “I’d like to emphasize then and continually: the punchline has always been that no one ever learns the outcome of the fishing trip!

Apologies to all, but that’s just been the humor of it, and it’ll remain so since it’s amusing in this manner. It’s even funnier kept this way. I’m glad we didn’t disclose its secret, as we’ve never known what it was ourselves.

Previously, I’d been playfully dropping hints about upcoming revelations, sharing with TopMob last month that “there’s a possibility you might discover something” during the finale episode.

The revelation unveiled it as a false lead, leaving that tragic vacation shrouded in enigma – an unsolved puzzle not just for the majority of the TV series characters, but for Bryn, Jason, and Dave alone, who bore the weight of that ominous secret.

Following the screening of the last episode to the press, Wilfort remarked, “Upon reading the script, much like everyone else, I was left astounded. It’s simply amazing! Despite our tears, it’s also incredibly hilarious.

Just now, I find myself laughing repeatedly while seated on the couch, reliving the moment. It’s all been such a delight.
