As a dedicated fan who has followed Gavin & Stacey since its inception, I must say that the unexpected romance between Gwen West and Dave Coaches in the 2024 Christmas special was an absolute delight! It’s been a long time coming for our beloved Gwen, who, despite her significant contributions to the West family, seemed to have had a rather quiet love life post-Trevor.
Actress Melanie Walters, known for her role in Gavin & Stacey, shared her thoughts on the unexpected love story between her character, Gwen West, and Dave Coaches (played by Steffan Rhodri), that was revealed in the 2024 Christmas special.
It seems the character’s romantic life has been largely uneventful or absent following the death of her first husband, Trevor, when she was a young woman, named Stacey in this instance.
Assisted by her brother-in-law, Rob Brydon, she focused on nurturing Stacey and Jason (Robert Wilfort). She’s always ready to prepare a speedy omelette or lend a hand with babysitting whenever required.
However, during the final episode of the series, Gwen makes a change prioritizing herself as she embarks on a passionate relationship with Dave, who was once involved with Nessa.
During the final episode viewing, Walters reminisced about the initial clue for the main plotline originating from Christine Gernon, the director of Gavin & Stacey, who had hinted that the script included a scene which could cause her to gasp slightly.
Indeed, as Walters stated, turning the page revealed the truth – it was none other than Dave Coaches. He confirmed it himself.
A small part of me was secretly wishing, as I pondered about the upcoming plot, that perhaps Gwen might find some romance.
After that, I never imagined it would be Dave coaching – instead, I assumed it would be something discarded by Doris.
Indeed, the actor expressed great delight upon encountering this unexpected turn of events. She extended her gratitude to the masterminds behind Gavin & Stacey, Ruth Jones and James Corden, for crafting a captivating, wondrous, and beautiful narrative arc for Gwen. Furthermore, she acknowledged feeling deeply grateful.
In a contribution to the conversation, the actor portraying Jason mentioned that after the initial surprise of the revelation, Gwen and Dave appear to be an exceptional pair – and it seems their future holds promise.
As a devoted viewer, I can’t help but express my admiration. Walter’s assertion about the final line of the episode struck a chord with me. When Gwen proclaimed her affection for Dave, following an extraordinarily courageous bus ride, it simply felt perfect.
