As a die-hard Gavin & Stacey fan who has watched every episode multiple times, I was genuinely saddened to learn that Dic Powell, played by the talented Gwynfor Roberts, did not make an appearance in the 2024 Christmas special. The character, with his peculiar charm and mysterious meat-selling business, added a unique flavor to the series that I always looked forward to.
In a recent disclosure, co-creator of Gavin & Stacey, Ruth Jones, unveiled that one particular character from the initial series will not be making an appearance in the upcoming 2024 Christmas special’s extended version.
As a seasoned film critic, I must say that the grand finale of Gavin & Stacey was nothing short of a reunion to remember. The core cast gracefully returned, just as anticipated, but what truly left me spellbound were the cameos of some cherished recurring characters who’ve been off-screen for quite some time.
Unfortunately, not everyone managed to make it to the final event. Doris, who was fondly remembered after actress Margaret John’s passing in 2011, and Owain Hughes, portrayed by Steven Meo, were both mentioned in the closing scene.
However, the character that almost returned to our screens was none other than Dic Powell, portrayed by Gwynfor Roberts. Unfortunately, due to the need to reduce the running time, he was omitted in a script rewrite by Jones and co-writer James Corden.
As a devoted fan, I recall that the charismatic Powell was initially only spoken of in the first two seasons of Gavin & Stacey by Uncle Bryn (the brilliant Rob Brydon), who praised him as the rare individual in Barry who converses fluently in Welsh. However, it wasn’t until the third season that we finally got to see this enigmatic character in person.
Viewers might recall him showing up at a cheerful backyard barbecue towards the end of season 3’s second-to-last episode, carrying a cooler brimming with meat for sale. This sparked concerns in Mick about the origins of this supply.
Given that Dic Powell had appeared just once, it’s logical he wasn’t viewed as a crucial figure for a return in the final episode. Still, it’s clear that fans would have cherished a brief reappearance of him before the series ended.
Luckily, there were numerous additional surprises to look forward to, such as Smithy’s friends from Essex (portrayed by Russell Tovey and Samuel Anderson), along with another character who has been eagerly anticipated by fans since the 2019 special.
