Gayle King’s latest assignment is out of this world.
The seasoned news reporter disclosed that she is among the women preparing for Blue Origin’s NS-31 space voyage. Gayle, aged 70, will join an all-female team consisting of pop sensation Katy Perry, media personality Lauren Sanchez, who put together the flying crew, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, human rights advocate Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m thrilled to share an extraordinary journey coming up this spring: I will be one of the privileged few to ascend 62 miles above our beautiful Earth, reaching the Kármán line – the boundary between our planet’s atmosphere and space. This unique experience adds another notch to the small group of individuals who have had the opportunity to witness our world from such a breathtaking vantage point.
After spending many years chronicling the remarkable adventures of others, Gayle confessed that she feels a bit apprehensive about setting out on her very own journey.
On CBS Mornings, February 27th, I expressed my feelings: “I’m both petrified and thrilled,” I confessed. “It’s challenging to put into words this mix of fear and excitement. It reminds me of the emotions I had before delivering a child – a complex cocktail of anticipation and apprehension.
In November, she disclosed that someone had proposed a mission to her, and before celebrating her significant 70th birthday the next month, she made up her mind to step out of her comfort zone and embark on a fresh experience.
Gayle clarified, “This wasn’t the dream I envisioned for myself.” She went on to recall someone suggesting, “‘Gayle, perhaps it’s time for you to pursue different aspirations.'” After a significant birthday, she felt ready to explore fresh opportunities and experiences.
Prior to setting off on this mission, Gayle sought advice from the three individuals who mean the most to her: her children Kirby Bumpus and Will Bumpus, as well as her close friend Oprah Winfrey.
Gayle, who divorced William Bumpus in 1993, revealed her thoughts after Kirby, Will, and Oprah agreed. “I thought Oprah might object, but she surprised me by saying yes. I remember thinking if I didn’t take the chance and everyone came back regretting it, I would be the one kicking myself. And she was right.
Gayle’s looking forward to the women joining her on this adventure, and she’s confident about the expedition.
Gayle expressed, “These ladies are truly inspiring! Their life journeys are captivating. I wholeheartedly support Blue Origin and its endeavors. I’m genuinely thrilled and eager for the upcoming events.
