Gears of War: E-Day Adds Judgment Studio as Co-Developer

The team responsible for ‘Gears of War: Judgment’ has disclosed that they are currently developing the next installment in the series titled ‘Gears of War: E-Day‘. Over the summer, Xbox unveiled that ‘E-Day’, the upcoming Gears of War game, would act as a prequel to the entire storyline. Since then, no further updates regarding this project have emerged; however, whispers suggest that ‘GoW: E-Day’ might release in 2025. Although this is yet unconfirmed, we now possess some insights into the ongoing work on the game.

Excitedly, I’m sharing the news that I’ve recently discovered: People Can Fly, a studio I’ve admired for their work on the original Gears of War trilogy and the spin-off, Judgment, has now taken up the mantle for Gears of War: E-Day. In recent times, they’ve been busy with Outriders, a co-op third-person shooter developed in collaboration with Square Enix. With that partnership concluded, they’re back working alongside The Coalition, the primary developer of Gears of War: E-Day.

People Can Fly is excited to collaborate on the upcoming mainline game, Gears of War: E-Day, a project they are working on alongside The Coalition. They feel privileged to revisit the world of Gears of War, a universe that holds significant importance for their studio’s past. As the original developers of the acclaimed Gears of War: Judgment and co-developers for games 1-3, they have consistently shown their enthusiasm for this series and its rich history.

As a gamer, it’s clear that People Can Fly’s decision isn’t exactly unexpected, but it does hint at them stepping away from independent projects for now. Despite the positive reception of Outriders, it didn’t seem to generate enough profits for the studio. Unfortunately, this led to layoffs in 2024 and a shift in focus. It looks like we might see more of their work on collaborative projects like Gears of War: E-Day in the future, rather than standalone games from them directly.

Concerning “Gears of War: E-Day”, there have been no recent updates from Xbox and The Coalition about the game. However, it’s rumored that the game might launch this year. Regardless of when “E-Day” is released, it’s confirmed that the next Gears title will be available on Xbox Series X/S and PC.
