Gena Rowlands, A Woman Under the Influence and The Notebook star, dies aged 94

As a film connoisseur who has spent countless hours immersed in the silver screen world, I find myself reminiscing about the unforgettable journey of Gena Rowlands, a true cinematic icon. Her passing at the age of 94 leaves an indelible mark on the annals of cinema history.

Legendary actress Gena Rowlands, famed for her performances in movies like “A Woman Under the Influence” and “The Notebook,” passed away at the age of 94.

On the afternoon of the 14th of August, Rowlands sadly breathed her last at her residence in Indian Wells, California, with her loved ones by her side.

The exact reason for her demise hasn’t been announced yet, however, it’s known that she was battling Alzheimer’s disease in her later years.

Over several decades, Rowlands’ acting career flourished, earning her four Emmy Awards, two Golden Globes, and even two Oscar nominations. These Oscar nods came for her performances in A Woman Under the Influence (1974) and Gloria (1980), both of which were directed by her late husband, John Cassavetes.

She is particularly recognized for playing the mature role of Allie in The Notebook, a character who suffers from Alzheimer’s. In this movie, the narrative follows an older version of Ryan Gosling’s character, Noah, telling the story of their relationship to help Allie recall their shared past.

In June, the entertainment magazine Entertainment Weekly had a conversation with her son, who is both a director and an actor named Nick Cassavetes, regarding Rowland’s character.

“He shared that he convinced his mother to portray an older character named Allie, and they invested significant time in discussing and authentically representing Alzheimer’s. Over the past five years, unfortunately, his mother has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.”

“She’s in full dementia. And it’s so crazy — we lived it, she acted it, and now it’s on us.”

On June 19, 1930, Rowlands was born in Cambria, Wisconsin. Later, she relocated to New York City to pursue an acting career, following some time spent in local theater productions. Her Broadway debut occurred in the play “The Seven Year Itch.”

In 1956, she starred in the Broadway play Middle of the Night opposite Edward G Robinson.

Later on, Rowlands became a prominent figure in the syndicated television show Top Secret, and made appearances as a guest star on several well-known anthology series.

1958 marked her first appearance on the big screen through ‘The High Cost of Loving’, yet it was her creative partnerships with Cassavetes that significantly defined her enduring impact.

The pair collectively produced ten films, such as “Faces” from 1968, “Opening Night” in 1977, and “Love Streams” in 1984, along with “A Woman Under the Influence” and “Gloria.”

Rowlands is survived by her husband, Robert, and children Nick, Alexandra and Zoe Cassavetes.
