Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa were living extremely privately up to their deaths.
On February 26, the deceased couple, accompanied by one of their three pets, were discovered at their residence in Santa Fe. Their most recent public sighting was during a lunch outing in the New Mexico city the previous spring.
As I stroll through the vibrant streets of March 2024, hand in hand with my beloved wife, I find myself reminiscing about the timeless elegance portrayed by the iconic French Connection star, Gene, now 95. He gracefully navigates our outing, leaning on his trusty cane and radiating a timeless charm. Dressed in a plaid button-down shirt, a cozy gray vest, and stylish green slacks, he tops off his ensemble with a hat and sunglasses perched atop the brim. My dear partner, Betsy, complements Gene’s dapper look with a silky patterned blouse and jeans, carrying a chic blue sweater as an accessory. The ever-gorgeous 64-year-old completes her outfit with sunglasses perched atop her head, adding a touch of sophistication to our charming duo.
2:00 PM on February 26th, Gene and Betsy were discovered deceased following a concerned neighbor’s call to the police for a wellness check, according to Santa Fe officials who spoke with NBC News. They mentioned that there were no signs of foul play in their deaths, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Sheriff Adan Mendoza shared with TMZ that the couple had likely been deceased for at least 24 hours, and the exact cause of their deaths remained undetermined. However, he pointed out that there were no obvious signs of injury on their bodies, so it was possible they might have fallen victim to a double homicide, suicide, an accident, or natural causes.
In the meantime, Gene’s daughter, Elizabeth Jean Hackman (who he had, along with his other children Christopher and Leslie, with his first wife Faye Maltese), shared that the family is still puzzled about what may have led to their father’s passing. However, they speculate it might have been due to harmful fumes.
After his last performance in 2004’s “Welcome to Mooseport,” Gene and Betsy generally avoided being in the spotlight, with only a few exceptions where they were photographed. This is because Gene, who won two Academy Awards for his roles in “The French Connection” and “Unforgiven,” as well as receiving three more nominations, openly expressed his disdain for the public side of acting.
In a conversation with “All About Actors” in 1992, he expressed his dislike for one aspect of his professional life: being photographed for stills and participating in film interviews about his work or movies. He finds it tiring and does as little of it as possible nowadays. When it comes to films, he simply does them and moves on, although occasionally he may engage in publicity for them. More often than not, however, he avoids such engagements.
