Growing up in Indiana, I’ve come to understand that experiencing the inspiring sports tale of “Hoosiers” is a traditional milestone, just like watching “Rudy”. The movie “Hoosiers” is based on the real-life story of the small Milan High School triumphantly winning an intense state championship against the heavily favored Muncie Central High School. Today, sports enthusiasts can’t help but notice similarities between this timeless underdog story and the ongoing NBA Finals series.
Consequently, it’s not surprising that the Indiana Pacers’ production crew played the locker room pep talk delivered by Coach Dale, aimed at stirring up the crowd during a crucial timeout.
Showcasing a memorable basketball or sports scene from a classic movie during the NBA Finals would align with the brand regardless of location. However, exhibiting it in the very city where the legendary sports event occurred decades earlier carries an extra touch of poetry.
The fervent audience clearly felt the influence, since the appearance of basketball legend Reggie Miller coincided with their synchronized slow clapping, which echoed after the speech in the film.
As an enthusiast of sports from Indiana and entertainment, I can’t imagine a more fitting homage to Gene Hackman in his passing year than this one. It’s hard to believe you’ll find a group more captivated by that film and scene than our crowd here. The fact that it culminated in the Pacers getting a shot at potentially creating history with a Game 7 win on Sunday just made it all the sweeter. Might we be witnessing the rise of another Team of Destiny?

Some of these dramatic scenes involved the Indiana Pacers, who found themselves in a disagreement with actor Ben Stiller and homegrown musician John Mellencamp over a mid-game speech that stirred up some controversy among fans.

The show is incredibly captivating cinematically, and it’s great news for Netflix subscribers as they get to witness the entire narrative unfold. NBA players Tyrese Haliburton of Pacers and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of Thunder, who are both cast members in Starting 5 Season 2, had crews document their entire season’s journey. I wonder if there’s enough footage to produce a standalone documentary focusing on the finals between their teams, and whether Netflix will consider making one, considering how engaging this story has been so far.
