George R.R. Martin Addresses Winds of Winter Delays With Cryptic Response

As a devoted fan of George R.R. Martin‘s epic saga, I find myself caught between hope and despair. Over the years, I’ve grown accustomed to his elusive writing pace and the tantalizing glimpses into the world of Westeros he provides us through interviews and snippets of unfinished work. His latest words about The Winds of Winter have left me with a strange sense of familiarity – a rollercoaster of emotions that I’ve experienced countless times before.

It appears George R.R. Martin may not complete the Game of Thrones series as suggested by some interpretations from his latest interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Although he didn’t explicitly state it, he hinted at being several years behind in writing the sixth book and mentioned that many believe he might not live long enough to finish the saga due to his age. Last year, he attempted to reassure fans when they learned he had recently met with his publisher.

Martin, who confessed in 2023 that he had written only about 1,100 pages of his book and that it would be extensive, was taken aback by the time it took him to complete it. “I’ve been 13 years behind schedule,” he admitted to THR, “Every time I say that, I can’t help but wonder, ‘How did I get 13 years behind?’ It just happens a day at a time.” Despite this delay, he reaffirmed that The Winds of Winter remains his primary concern. “But it’s still a priority,” he said, acknowledging the naysayers who claim he won’t finish. “Many have written my obituary, saying ‘He’ll never be done.’ Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. But here I am, very much alive and seemingly in good health!

Previously, the author hinted at a significant revelation once the book was completed. Often, he grew tired of fan inquiries about its progress, occasionally requesting they cease asking. Lately, he appears to be dealing with the situation more gracefully, possibly because he’s accepting that the story might not have a definitive ending. It’s important to note that The Winds of Winter is not the final installment; instead, the saga will end with another book called A Dream of Spring.

It’s challenging to rely on Martin’s statements, considering his earlier promise not to work on other projects until completing the sixth book of the Game of Thrones series. Yet, surprisingly, Fire & Blood was released and even sparked a TV spin-off during this period. Despite this, he has expressed no intention of retiring in the near future, offering some optimism – if any still remains among the fandom.

Right now, Martin is dedicating time to several pieces penned by his deceased friend Howard Waldrop, whose tales he’s previously funded for adaptation. It appears that Martin’s immersion in the audiovisual realm, particularly with the production of ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘House of the Dragon’, has slowed down his own writing pace. He admittedly isn’t making as much progress as he initially intended. Notably, a new spin-off titled ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘ is slated for release in 2025, with Martin also serving as an executive producer. This upcoming piece is expected to be more concise compared to its predecessors.

Fans have grown accustomed to viewing his statements with skepticism, particularly since he’s been talking about publishing The Winds of Winter for more than ten years now. It’s questionable when the author himself is uncertain about the future, so it’s hard to feel optimistic again. However, it’s also worth noting that fans are quite accustomed to such delays given the long gaps in both the book and TV series releases. At this point, there seems to be little we can do but wait.
