George R.R. Martin, the author renowned for ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’, took a moment in his latest blog post on Tuesday to address some impatient fans, while also announcing an exciting new project. He revealed plans for an animated feature film adaptation of a late friend’s novel, Howard Waldrop. Martin will produce this movie, following the release of several short films based on Waldrop’s work. However, amidst this announcement, Martin took a brief pause to anticipate the wave of frustration from fans eagerly waiting for ‘The Winds of Winter’. He acknowledged his commitment to the project but did not provide any fresh updates regarding the delay.
Martin acknowledged that some readers might feel frustrated with his latest announcement since it’s not related to Westeros or “The Winds of Winter”. He further explained by rephrasing the harsh feedback he has received online – “You’ve lost faith in me or the book. I’ll never finish ‘Winds’. If I do, I’ll never finish ‘A Dream of Spring’. If I do, it won’t be any good. I should let another author take over… I’m going to die soon anyway because I’m so old.
As a dedicated movie buff, I’ve been consistently voicing my thoughts that mirror those commonly found among Game of Thrones enthusiasts online. “Decades ago, A Song of Ice and Fire lost its allure for me,” I confess. “I no longer feel the urge to write; instead, I find myself idle, indulging in my wealth. I also edit Wild Cards books, but you’ve made it clear that you’re not fond of them. It seems that everything else I’ve ever written – the award-winners and those overlooked for awards – doesn’t matter to you. All you care about is The Winds of Winter. You’ve expressed this sentiment time and again.
Martin continued, “To be clear, I have a deep affection for everyone and everything in Westeros, including the Starks, Lannisters, Targaryens, characters like Tyrion, Asha, Dany, Daenerys, and even the dragons and direwolves. My feelings run much deeper than you might think.
Martin has run out of things to add regarding the subject, only confirming that he’s noticed criticisms about his book delay online or in private messages. Fans’ responses to this prolonged wait have fluctuated between impatience and empathy for years. Initially, they sympathized with him when writing his book amidst a hit TV series, but now that the show is finished, Martin resuming other projects has left some fans feeling frustrated once more.
For Martin, the upcoming film titled “A Dozen Tough Jobs” seems to hold a deep personal connection similar to “The Winds of Winter“. He has often shared in past blog posts and his book “Dreamsongs“, his long-standing friendship with Waldrop. As kids, they became friends through science fiction fan zines, maintaining their correspondence throughout their lives. Sadly, Waldrop passed away in 2024, an event that left Martin deeply affected. In part, adapting Waldrop’s work for the screen is a tribute to his cherished friend.
As a dedicated reader and movie enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly waiting for the next installment of George R.R. Martin’s epic saga, “A Song of Ice and Fire.” Last we heard, back in 2023, “The Winds of Winter” was roughly three-quarters complete, but it seems we may not be seeing its release anytime soon. Despite his initial plans to wrap up the series with two more books, Martin has lately emphasized that other projects hold equal importance for him. In the meantime, we can immerse ourselves in the ongoing tale by picking up the unfinished series in print, digital, or audiobook formats.
