Without surprise to many, the film that earned Gerard Butler the most recognition in live-action is 300. Released in 2007, this movie marked a turning point in the career of the actor previously known for films like Dracula 2000 and Reign of Fire, propelling him into leading roles. As a cultural sensation, 300 boosted Butler’s influence in Hollywood substantially. Its impressive $454.1 million global gross has left an enduring impact on his other films, as no other live-action movie featuring Butler has surpassed $250 million worldwide. While audiences enthusiastically shout “this is Sparta!”, there is some hesitance regarding his other films.
Among Butler’s movies, it might seem that one of the “Olympus Has Fallen” series holds the title for his largest live-action film globally. However, surprisingly, this isn’t the case. In reality, it’s a relatively underperforming movie from 2017, known as “Geostorm”, which holds that distinction, making for an amusing twist in the world of box office data. Fans of “Law Abiding Citizen” and “The Ugly Truth” may feel let down today.
How Much Did Geostorm Make Worldwide?
For those unaware, “Geostorm” is a 2017 film directed by Dean Devlin, which takes place in an alternate Earth where humans have technology to control the weather using advanced satellites. However, when these machines are taken over, devastating weather events occur worldwide. Jake Lawson (played by Butler) finds himself in space as these storms and tornadoes wreak havoc on Earth. As the planet struggles to survive, Jake is called upon for help, while his brother Max (Sturgess) works to thwart a plot involving a weather-related assassination attempt at the DNC.
It’s clear that the film “Geostorm” isn’t likely to be found among the esteemed collection of Criterion Films anytime soon. Unlike some other disaster movies like “The Core” or “2012“, it hasn’t developed a following for late-night viewings as an ironic choice. This, combined with its high production budget of $130 million, likely contributed to its poor performance at the box office. However, despite its flop status, the movie managed to earn $221.6 million worldwide, making it Gerard Butler’s highest-grossing non-300 film globally, surpassing the worldwide gross of “The Ugly Truth“.
A substantial portion of that massive amount primarily came from moviegoers worldwide, who contributed an impressive $187.09 million to its global total (contrasting with a relatively small $33.7 million earned domestically). International audiences have historically been drawn to the grandeur of disaster films, as exemplified by movies like 2012 earning more than $603 million internationally back in 2009. Considering this, it’s worth noting that more realistic action films featuring the Butler character, such as Angel Has Fallen ($64.31 million) and Law Abiding Citizen ($57.8 million), generated significantly less internationally.
What Other Box Office Advantages Did Geostorm Wield?
One key difference that sets Geostorm apart from other movies starring Gerard Butler is its association with a major studio, Warner Bros. Pictures. This global distribution allowed the film, primarily financed by Skydance Productions, to enjoy top-tier marketing and distribution services provided by one of Hollywood’s leading studios. In contrast, films like Law Abiding Citizen and Gamer, also starring Butler, were independently produced and lacked the unified global distribution strategy that Geostorm benefited from.
As a movie enthusiast, I’d say that Geostorm stood out among Gerard Butler’s films due to its wider appeal for international audiences. Being a PG-13 film with an emphasis on computer-generated spectacle, Geostorm had the power to captivate viewers from all corners of the globe. On the other hand, a movie like Plane might put off some viewers who are sensitive to violence. The broad appeal of Geostorm, however, also meant it lacked the depth that could have made it more relatable. Yet, toning down the usual intensity of Gerard Butler’s action scenes seemed to pay off, particularly in markets like China where it earned a whopping $65.6 million.
In contrast to many of Gerard Butler’s films, “Geostorm” stands out because it had an unusually high financial target, needing to earn over $200 million just to break even. For instance, a smaller-budget romantic comedy like “The Ugly Truth” didn’t need to gross as much as $375 million or more. Similarly, other moderately priced Butler films like “Law Abiding Citizen” didn’t require such a massive box office haul. The main reason “Geostorm” towers above other Butler movies that aren’t “300” is its larger budget and higher profile. This explains why “Geostorm” outperformed all but one of Butler’s other major films in terms of box office success, and also why it can still be classified as a significant box office bomb.
