Gerry’s illness, which he referred to as a “long-named bone marrow cancer,” is actually known as Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia. This condition starts in the white blood cells and makes them cancerous, as explained by Mayo Clinic. The American Cancer Society reports that over a five-year period, 90% of patients with Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia survive.
Gerry remarked, “I must say, there isn’t a solution for this condition, which influences every choice I make significantly. It felt as if a massive 10-ton block had fallen on me unexpectedly. For some time, I was in denial, unwilling to acknowledge it.
My personal journey to receiving a diagnosis wasn’t straightforward; it took a few twists and turns along the way. During a routine check-up, some peculiar findings showed up on my blood tests, which prompted my doctor to refer me to an oncologist. Initially, I was given a preliminary diagnosis of a blood disorder, but it wasn’t until February that I was officially told I had cancer. I shared the news with my then-wife the following month.
Gerry expressed difficulty, and Theresa was taken aback by the news. He shared his desire for life to return to its routine, which made him think that “as normal as possible” meant spending time with his family, including his two daughters, their husbands, and his granddaughters.
He noted that his marriage quickly fell down his list of priorities, adding, “The importance of finding the way with Theresa was still there, but it became less of a priority.”
In her absence, I express my heartfelt hope for my ex’s wellbeing, wishing her an abundance of happiness and success in every corner of her world.
He described the time with Theresa as amazing,” he said, “but regrettably, it didn’t end as hoped. We couldn’t figure out how to continue, resolve our issues, or find a way forward. Above all, I wish the diagnosis that impacted my choices and path hadn’t been part of the picture.
