As a curious observer of reality TV, I find it fascinating to delve into the behind-the-scenes stories of how these shows are cast. The tales from the very first season of “Love Is Blind” are no exception. It’s intriguing to see how different paths led these individuals to the pods, and their unique experiences make for compelling viewing.
You won’t be able to turn a blind eye to these casting revelations.
Since the seventh season of “Love Is Blind” premiered on Netflix October 2, fans find themselves captivated by the array of relationships, splits, and drama unfolding within the pods. Frankly, it’s no surprise they can’t get enough!
But have you ever wondered how exactly the stars get on the reality show in the first place? Lucky for you, we’ve found some answers.
As Donna Driscoll, the casting director from Kinetic Content (the production company behind Love Is Blind), shared with IndieWire in 2023, once a city has been chosen for filming (this time it’s Washington D.C.), our team begins sharing information and hunting for single participants via cold calls, direct messages on social media, and contacts with local businesses and churches.
Once we have adequately piqued interest, it’s now appropriate to begin refining the group of potential candidates. Donna shared that her team engages in approximately 2,000 phone interviews before reducing this number to around 300-400 for video chats.
So what do they ask the applicants during these chats?
Donna pointed out to IndieWire that potential candidates must demonstrate certain qualities: they should have worked on themselves, healed from past love experiences, grasp the essence of love, or have felt true love. Moreover, those who are considered for the Zoom interviews must fill out a comprehensive questionnaire consisting of approximately 300 questions. She explained that this questionnaire is thorough and each candidate undergoes background checks and psychological evaluations before advancing to the podcast.
Following this, she shared with the media outlet that she and her fellow casting directors will assemble approximately 60 to 70 individuals, from whom they’ll make their final choices – with season seven featuring 29 singles. It is evident that Donna and her team possess a keen eye for talent, given that she has been nominated twice for an Emmy in the Outstanding Casting for a Reality Program category for her work on ‘Love Is Blind’.

In essence, Amber Desiree (AD) might have never made it onto the reality show Love Is Blind if not for a twist of fate. According to her account on Nick Viall’s podcast The Viall Files, she was working at a nightclub owned by her former partner when she was approached for casting.
Regarding his previous betrothed Clay, he stated that he too was contacted via Instagram by the casting team. Specifically, he received a direct message from one of the directors, who were seeking individuals in the Charlotte region. They called it “The Charlotte Singles Project.” Curious about what might transpire, he agreed to the series of interviews. Surprisingly, after the seventh interview, they informed him that he had been selected as a cast member for season six.
It seems that Brittany discussed the details of those interviews on the De-Influenced With Dani Austin podcast. She mentioned that there are different types, such as phone calls and video chats like FaceTime or Zoom. The interviewers would ask questions about her intentions for dating, her current relationship status, her feelings towards dating in general, and specifically in Charlotte. Brittany had recently moved to Charlotte and heard the dating scene was difficult. When a Love Is Blind recruiter contacted her on Instagram, she decided to learn more about the show she wasn’t familiar with by having a follow-up call. After several interviews, Brittany said that she eventually joined the show, where she got engaged to castmate Kenneth Gorham before they ultimately split outside the pods.
In my experience, it’s not just Instagram where the casting team reaches out for shows like ‘Love Is Blind’. For instance, I was contacted about the show through LinkedIn initially, which left me doubting its authenticity at first. However, upon further inquiry, I found out they were serious and got a call right away. This marked the beginning of my audition process.
In contrast to some participants, Chelsea, who was previously engaged to Jimmy Presnell on the show before their separation, mentioned during an episode of Sarah Alysse Bobo’s Stress Free SOULutions Podcast that she and Laura Dadisman were among the few who applied rather than being discovered through social media platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, or TikTok. After learning that Love Is Blind was casting in Charlotte and receiving encouragement from loved ones, Chelsea decided to apply, receiving a callback the next day.
Jessica, too, submitted an application for the Netflix series. At first, she harbored some doubts about it.
In the fifth season, it turned out that Izzy was approached for the show “Love Is Blind” – quite literally. He explained this on “The Viall Files”, saying he received a call from an unknown L.A. number while working out during his lunch break, which he initially dismissed as spam. After ignoring the call twice, he received a lengthy text asking if he’d ever seen the show and expressing interest in speaking with him. Izzy thought it was too good to be true, but eventually decided to give it a shot. He added the casting person on Instagram to confirm her identity, and was amazed to discover that she was indeed real. Excited by his profile, she arranged a Zoom interview with him.
Previously, production studios had contacted some “Love Is Blind” cast members, including Uche, for other shows. For instance, Uche mentioned that he was first approached for “Married at First Sight” but that was before “Love Is Blind.” Although Uche felt that “Married at First Sight” wasn’t the right fit for him, he was open to participating in “Love Is Blind.” Over time, Uche received repeated invitations to be on various shows. Given his single status, he decided to take a chance and join the show.
Was Kwame, a former soccer player in Sweden, originally approached for the show “Married at First Sight”? No, he shared that it was his participation in “Love Is Blind” that ensued after someone attempted to recruit him for the latter show around 2018 or 2019. During their conversation, Kwame recounted the amusing exchange: “‘Hey, you don’t know me, but I got your number from this person and I just wanted to ask you—would you think that you’re ready to get married?'” He recalled his response as a surprised “Woah! I don’t think so.” After consulting with his sister, Kwame decided to give “Married at First Sight” a try, but soon realized it wasn’t suitable for him. Eventually, he met and married Chelsea Griffin on “Love Is Blind”.
Regarding Colleen from season three, it’s worth mentioning that she had once been a potential candidate for the Netflix series “Sexy Beasts”. In an interview with Deepti Vempati and Natalie Lee on the “Out of the Pods” podcast, she shared her memory of the encounter: “I thought it was ridiculous,” she said, recalling her initial impression. She then never received any further communication from them, until COVID-19 or a similar event occurred. Interestingly, when a casting member from “Love Is Blind” contacted her on Instagram, she initially believed it was a fake approach. Colleen, who married Matt Bolton on the show, casually dismissed the initial contact, but eventually went through with the process, leading to her appearance in the pods.
If you’re curious about the application procedure for the show, feel free to inquire with Nancy – she shared that she applied during a girls’ trip to Cancún.
Natalie, another applicant, provided some insight into how these responses might be utilized during the selection procedure. In truth, this process isn’t just about picking people at random for the show. Instead, there is a compatibility aspect that we consider, and we perform numerous tests to ensure there are suitable matches for everyone.
In the case of the initial season of Love Is Blind, it seems that the casting process wasn’t remarkably unique. As Cameron shared on their YouTube channel, both he and his spouse, Lauren Speed-Hamilton, were contacted by the casting team.
Through a friend who was connected to the entertainment industry, Jessica came across an audition call for the reality TV show “Love Is Blind”. She explained that her friend was previously a news anchor in Atlanta and had an agent send her the casting call. Since everyone else in their group of friends were in relationships, she was the only single one, so the friend passed it along to her.
An alternative method for Love Is Blind recruiters to discover individuals seeking their perfect match could be by exploring dating apps. As Damian, who proposed to Giannina Gibelli in the pods but later changed his mind at the altar, shared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, “I was quite unique because they found me on Tinder.” He continued, “We hit it off while chatting, she suggested adding each other on Instagram. We connected well, and then she revealed she was a casting producer. I thought she might be catfishing me, ha ha!
