After Morgan Wallen walked, SNL ran with it.
A week following the nation’s singer performing as the musical act and departing the stage at Studio 8H during live broadcast, prior to the credits wrapping up, the NBC show playfully mocked his unexpected early departure due to controversy.
In the cold open sketch of the April 5th episode, I found a humorous reference to the initial announcement of widespread tariffs by Donald Trump on imported goods.
As a die-hard fan, let me share this: “Listen up, folks! Just like the president I’m portraying, there’s no corner of the globe spared from my tariff tactics. Even an island devoid of human life, Heard and McDonald Island, has felt the impact of my economic policies.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, allow me to share an exciting revelation: I’ve been visualizing a journey to an extraordinary locale – none other than the enchanting McDonald Island! Could you kindly retrieve the artwork for me, dear friend Howard? Once it’s in hand, let us both marvel at its beauty. This place is calling my name, and I can’t help but feel drawn to it – a longing to immerse myself in nature’s grandeur, as if stepping into God’s very own realm.
Following his unexpected departure from the TV show based in New York City during the March 29 episode, Wallen – a resident of Tennessee – posted a picture on Instagram that seemed to depict a private jet on a runway. Accompanying the image was the now famous phrase, “Transport me to God’s own land.
On the 5th of April, during the episode of Saturday Night Live, they made a humorous commentary about Wallen’s contentious departure that was featured on Weekend Update.
In the last two days alone, investors have seen a staggering loss of around $6 trillion due to the declining stock market following President Trump’s tariff announcement, according to coanchor Colin Jost. He humorously compared this rapid withdrawal of funds to Morgan Wallen’s swift departures at ‘goodnights.’
In the wake of SNL’s humorous comments about Wallen, it follows that these remarks were made some time later, with a SNL writer previously satirizing his “God’s Country” statement online.
According to a source familiar with him, the singer known as “Just in Case” did not explicitly address his controversial exit, but TMZ reported that he left the studio without any special meaning, similar to how he usually departed after rehearsals. The source added that on this particular occasion, he felt it was time to leave, just like he had earlier in the week.
Three days following the controversy, the artist introduced a clothing line that included the phrase “Guide me to God’s land,” which was then shared by his official fan club on Instagram accompanied by an airplane symbol. The caption of the post also mentioned the location as “God’s Land.
Look back at Morgan’s most controversial moments…
Leaving from New York…it’s an unexpected departure.
On March 29, 2025, Morgan Wallen performed as the musical guest for Saturday Night Live, sharing the stage with host Mikey Madison.
As the star of the show Anora bid farewell to viewers, Wallen gave her a brief hug before leaving—deviating from the usual custom of socializing with the cast during the credits.
Wallen later shared a picture of an airplane on the runway via his Instagram Stories and captioned it, “Transport me to God’s country.
Back in April 2024, I found myself facing allegations that I threw a chair off the rooftop of the popular Nashville bar, Chief’s. The authorities shared this information with the public at the time. A week or so later, I took to social media to address the situation.
“I felt it wasn’t right to check in publicly until I made amends with those affected,” I wrote on April 19, 2024. “I’ve reached out to Nashville law enforcement, my family, and the team at Chief’s. I’m not proud of my actions, and I take full responsibility.”
Fast forward to December 2024, I pleaded guilty to two counts of misdemeanor reckless endangerment related to the chair-throwing incident. As part of my sentence, I was placed on probation for two years and served a seven-day stint at a DUI education center. I’ve learned from this experience and am committed to making better choices moving forward as a lifestyle expert.
As an ardent fan, I can’t help but feel deeply troubled by the video leak revealing Wallen using a racial slur in February 2021. To express my remorse, he issued a statement to TopMob News saying, “I’m ashamed and apologetic. I used an abhorrent and indefensible racial slur that I wish I could retract. There are no justifications for such language, ever. I genuinely want to make amends for my actions. I pledge to do better.”
His use of the slur resulted in country music artists condemning him, radio stations withdrawing him, his label suspending his contract temporarily, and a ban from several award shows that year. In an Instagram video later, he admitted, “Words have power, and I now understand that a word can truly hurt someone. As a person at my core, it’s not something I’m comfortable with. This week, I listened to personal accounts of Black people, which left me feeling humbled. Their stories gave me a profound understanding of the impact of words.
In October 2020, I was set to appear musically on SNL, but following the emergence of pictures and videos showing me partying in Alabama, I was removed from the show for violating its COVID-19 safety rules.
Here’s how I announced it on social media: “I had plans to be on SNL this weekend, but the show informed me that I wouldn’t be able to perform anymore. It’s all due to COVID guidelines, and I get it.” At the time, I wasn’t infected with COVID-19, but looking back, my actions over the weekend were careless and they have undoubtedly impacted my future aspirations.
In a more personal reflection, I believe I need to mature more. I seem to have lost myself a bit, finding joy in the wrong places, which has left me feeling empty. So, I’m going to take some time off from the spotlight and focus on self-improvement.
Luckily, Jack White took my place as the musical guest, but I was given another opportunity to perform on SNL in December. In one of the skits that night, I even joked about the incident.
Previously, a former contestant on “The Voice” found himself in legal trouble following an incident at Kid Rock’s Big Ass Honky Tonk Rock N’ Roll Steakhouse in May 2020. According to a warrant obtained by The Tennessean, the individual, identified as Wallen, was accused of damaging glass items and engaging in heated verbal exchanges with passersby on the street.
In a statement posted on his social media at the time, Wallen explained, “Hey y’all just wanted to clear the air… I went out downtown last night with some old friends. After a few stops at bars, we were having some fun and horseplaying with each other. We didn’t mean any harm, and we want to say sorry to any bar staff or anyone that was affected.”
The charges against Wallen were eventually dropped in July 2020, as indicated by online court records from the Howard Gentry Criminal Court Clerk in Tennessee.
In 2016, it was reported that Wallen was taken into custody on suspicion of driving while intoxicated in Tennessee, as indicated by online court documents. Later in the same year, these documents show that the charges against him were dropped.
