A fresh take on the beloved “Winnie the Pooh” saga is in development, spearheaded by an impressive creative crew. Notably, Disney is not participating at all in this project.
Since the iconic yellow bear character has entered the public domain, studios are seizing the chance to create their own interpretations of it, free from Disney’s strict control. The latest example is the chilling horror movie titled “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey“. Despite not being a financial hit, the studio continues to develop a sequel and more horror films inspired by other Disney properties that have entered the public domain.
Most likely, they’re doing so simply because they can.
Once again, the beloved series by A.A. Milne, “Winnie-The-Pooh from The Hundred Acre Wood”, is being adapted, similar to “Blood and Honey”, and this time without any involvement from Disney.
According to a report by Deadline, Kartoon Studios recently revealed the initial trailer for an upcoming series at the Sundance Film Festival. This series is slated for release towards the end of 2025. In total, it will consist of 200 six-minute episodes and five specials designed for holidays. The animation style will be a unique blend of yarn-based animation, incorporating both AI and hand-drawn characters and backdrops.
All that’s missing currently is a cast.
The beloved “Winnie the Pooh” series is set to premiere on the Kartoon Channel, a service available through Amazon’s Prime Video channel subscriptions. While Amazon’s name may spark some concerns, it’s essential to note that they are not directly involved in the production of the show. Instead, their role will be limited to distribution, meaning they have no control over the content of the program.
The studio and people who are actually involved have much more credibility.
Winnie The Pooh’s New Studio
Kartoon Studios is a well-known animation studio that specializes in creating cartoons primarily for young audiences. Some of the shows on their roster are Rainbow Rangers, Llama Llama, Secret Millionaire Club, and Thomas Edison’s Secret Lab, all of which have garnered considerable success within the realm of children’s entertainment, particularly when targeting younger age groups.
It seems that Kartoon Studios’ shows are free from ulterior motives, which is a positive indication. This suggests they understand well how to create content suitable for children.
The People
Besides the studio, members of the team also have good credentials in children’s entertainment.
Sam Morrison, a former scriptwriter for ‘Peppa Pig’ on Nickelodeon, currently serves as the lead writer. This show has become a household name, particularly among young kids. Its title is so well-known that even those without children are familiar with it.
Michael Maliani serves as the director. His impressive portfolio features niche cartoons for children that gained a devoted fanbase, such as “Mummies Alive” and “Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century”. He has contributed to various adaptations of “Strawberry Shortcake”, “Inspector Gadget”, “Madeline”, “Sabrina”, and “Archie”. Additionally, he was deeply involved in “Liberty Kids”, “Carmen Sandiego”, and “The Smurfs”. Lately, Maliani has directed multiple episodes for two Kartoon Studios series: “Shaq’s Garage” and “Rainbow Rangers”.
In short, his resumé bodes extremely well for this new Winnie the Pooh series.
At present, it’s uncertain if the series will prove entertaining for everyone. However, based on its content, it appears to be suitable for children, being devoid of hidden agendas or excessive extraneous material.
